Please help my friend and colleague get back on her feet – literally!
A request for assistance coming from Pastor Brian Eastman on behalf of Rev. Ria Roth
Imagine, if you will, what happened to my friend and colleague Rev. Ria Roth. One morning early last October, Ria got out of bed and was maneuvering herself toward her dresser. Because her left knee's function had deteriorated badly she was putting more of her weight on her good right leg.
Then, WHAM, she finds herself face-down on the apartment's rug floor. Her right knee had collapsed. She had to phone someone to come help her get off the floor.
The orthopedist told her that both knees were, essentially irreparable. They need replaced.
Here's the challenge. Ria lives alone. She is warm, loving, generous to a fault, and helps so many people experience a Loving God and what human love is, at its best. She lives a life which is a testimony to the beauty of simplicity.
She generates income from multiple sources: Licensed Clinical Massage Therapist, LIIFT Practitioner (healing emotionally damaged lives), Polarity Practitioner, Wedding and Funeral Officiant. She also serves as a Oneness Blessing Giver and Trainer. She is ordained as a minister of my church, Revelation Spiritual Church, a trans-denominational church. She leads a spiritual studies and blessing service on Sunday mornings.
BUT, for doing all this she makes only a modest living. Despite living simply, she lacks the savings she needs to survive during the 6-8 weeks of recovery and the additional month or so she will need to get her healing practice running again. (She had some savings, but a winter car crash with concussion chewed that up.)
Ria tried to accomplish the savings by postponing the surgery until March, relying on braces and physical therapy paid by her health plan to buy her time. She was working hard to rack up savings by seeing more clients for massage and LIIFT, and by doing more weddings and any funerals which came along.
Unfortunately, most of the work she does requires standing. (Have you ever seen a wedding officiant perform a ceremony sitting? Or come up to the altar on crutches? Or a massage therapist sitting on a stool?) Also unfortunate: her legs have given up almost completely. She is in such pain and so unstable on her feet that she can't even walk her dog or take the garbage out.
The photograph here leaves out the best part. Outside the image on the web you would have seen Ria sitting with a lap rug over her painful legs . . . and her cat Thomas lying there purring and comforting her.
Both her physical therapist and her surgeon say she needs surgery THIS MONTH, and she is following their recommendation.
Ria figures she needs $5900 to cover her bare-bones living expenses for 2 months' recovery and 1 month getting her clients back. If you are willing to help her, she is glad to help you have a better life too. (See list below.)
And I am including some Thank-You services I will perform in her support, since I live on a small budget myself and am limited in what I can give her financially.
(Note: I have asked the church Board for approval to give some financial support to Ria, and expect to get approval, especially since she is one of our ministers. But it still won't be much because the Benevolence Fund is teeny. In fact, Ria tells me that any funds left over once she is healed will go into our Benevolence Fund in order to help others.)
