The David Mateyka Fund

On Thursday, July 2nd, David Mateyka was seen by a doctor for troubling neurological concerns. David had been experiencing worsening headaches and had difficulty concentrating for several months. His symptoms could have pointed to a number of issues, so physicians conducted an MRI scan of his head that day.

With it being a major holiday weekend, the physicians said they would read the MRI scans and report back with results the following week. Fortunately, David’s (amazing) mother demanded that his MRI be read immediately. David and his family were shocked to hear the MRI showed a mass in David’s brain approximately 2cm in size.

Not knowing the nature of the mass, David was admitted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis as an emergency case that evening. In the following days, David had several procedures to minimize the pressure that was building in his brain. Surgeons were able to take some of the tumor and send it to the lab for analysis while David and his family waited for the results.

Fortunately, through God’s grace, David’s tumor is unlikely to be aggressive and treatment options exist to help him regain normal function. After two weeks in the hospital he was able to return home. All told, one week in the ICU, two brain surgeries and some rehab have David on the mend. While it is possible that David may need additional interventions to manage his tumor, his prognosis is good. Further treatment may consist of chemotherapy/medicine and radiation.

David is a music teacher for Mount Vernon Township High School and was previously the music teacher for Vienna High School. He has dedicated his life to teaching others and has been a longstanding member of the community. In this difficult time, we ask for help from the community. Unfortunately, as with many major medical events, David will need help to cover the cost of his care. We humbly ask for your donations to support David after his life changing diagnosis.

The David Mateyka Fund will help to cover medical and travel expenses incurred by David and his immediate family. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Well wishes and other messages can be directed to David’s Facebook page. Thank you.
