Raising money for Ron's lawyer fees and other jail expenses including phone calls.
Here's the info:
Ron is currently in jail in Pinellas County, Florida. Last week he went to Florida to do a favor for a friend. He picked up a U-Haul truck to deliver some cabinets for his friend, and when he was driving the U-Haul he passed an agricultural inspection checkpoint, and was pulled over for not stopping at the checkpoint (he was not aware that he was supposed to stop for an agricultural inspection site). When they pulled him over, they discovered that he had a 27-year-old warrant for his arrest in Florida. The warrant was because he had left Florida while on probation when he was in his early twenties. He was on probation for a crime that he never committed. The incident he was originally arrested for in 1992 was a burglary that he was innocent of (he was arrested because he looked similar to the young man who was guilty of the theft, and Ron's public defender at that time convinced him to plead guilty and get probation rather than possible jail time).
Because he violated probation by leaving Florida 27 years ago, we are now being told that he may end up GOING TO PRISON FOR A FEW YEARS.
We have found a lawyer to help him out, who can hopefully lessen his sentence as much as possible. The lawyer normally charges around $5k - $6k for his services but is giving Ron a discounted rate of $2k.
Ron has asked that I reach out to his family and friends to help raise funds for his lawyer. If anyone is interested in making a contribution, you can do so through this GoFundMe campaign (the GoFundMe campaign will take 2.9% of your donation) or you can donate directly via PayPal or cashapp (info below).
Ron would also like to sell his camper to raise money for the lawyer's fees. He has a 1969 Goldstar Lil' Hobo, selling for $2500. If you know of anyone who may be interested in the camper please have them contact me directly through private messenger or email.
This is a very stressful time for Ron, but he greatly appreciates knowing that he has supportive friends and family back home who are thinking of him and praying for him. This past week while in jail he has had a lot of time for reflection and introspection, and in his words, he said he "was young and stupid" and wishes he had done things differently.
Ron's current expenses for this situation include:
$2k lawyer fee
$190+ phone calls from jail
$14/day parking for his truck at the Detroit airport lot until someone who can drive a stick shift can relocate it to another location, hopefully to Grand Rapids.
