Over the last few years our family has learned that providing a fair and appropriate education for children with special needs is a long and uphill battle. Our son Jesse doesn’t just “fit” into a particular disability. He's a unique kid affected by disability and deals with a host of challenges that can make education difficult.
Difficult, but not impossible.
We were so thankful when after a year of seemingly endless IEP meetings and conversations our school district agreed it would be more appropriate to provide for Jesse the opportunity to attend a specialized school that truly understands Jesse’s disabilities, and how to address them academically.
The TALK Institute and School is the nation's most progressive center for the education of children with autism and speech/language disorders. Jesse is one of those children with a severe speech/language disorder. TALK provides intensive occupational and speech therapy to support a full-day of systematic, multisensory, language-based curriculum.
After only a year of attending TALK, Jesse has made incredible strides in both his ability to communicate with others and his academic learning. We are so grateful for the work the put into helping our son communicate, passionately living out their conviction that not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say.
This past year our school district decided that our son Jesse was not making enough "progress" to warrant the money being spent and decided to pull the funding for his tuition, recommending we place him in a Life Skills class. While we believe this class can be an incredible experience and benefit to other kids affected by disability, it was not not the appropriate class for Jesse. So we pushed back, again, not wanting anything to stand in the way of the progress he was making.
Eventually we agreed to accept an offer that would afford Jesse another year at TALK but with only half of the tuition he needs leaving us with $20,000 to pay for Jesse's remaining tuition and wrap around services. Our plan is to do all that we can as a family to raise the remaining funds by December 31st.
Would you consider financially partnering with us so that we are able to provide Jesse with another year at TALK?
