Jes Is Going Bald For Cancer!

Donation protected
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to have to sit in a doctor's office and have them tell you that you have cancer? To be honest, it was not something I gave much thought to... until it happened to me.

In April of this year, I was diagnosed with cancer. The journey has been an interesting one and I am very thankful for all the love and support I have received from family and friends both near and far. Thankfully, I have been one of the lucky few that has not had to undergo chemotherapy throughout my journey which means I have not had to experience the loss of my hair. However, this Saturday, November 25th, I will be SHAVING MY HEAD to raise funds and awareness for some causes that I feel very passionate about.

Movember is a campaign that is designated toward raising money for men's health, including multiple cancers, mental health awareness and suicide prevention. No, I am not a male and no, I cannot grow a mustache (...at least not very well) but cancer and mental health are two things I am very passionate about. I am very lucky to be a part of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta, where each year we participate in a team fundraising initiative to raise money for this cause. Last year we raised over $37 000 and each year we try to do our best to beat our previous goal.

The second cause that I am raising money for is my friend, Ben. He is from the UK and we had the pleasure of meeting in the summer of 2016 when we both happened to be traveling through Prague. In July, at the age of 21, Ben was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in his knee. After multiple rounds of chemotherapy, the doctor's have told Ben that there is no other alternative but to amputate his leg. Ben's family and friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to allow him to receive the best replacement leg possible and to continue doing things he loves, such as playing hockey. I am showing my support for him half a world away, and I hope you will join me in doing so.

So what can you do to support me? Donate.

Although I would like to guilt you into donating by pulling out the cancer card or the "I am 27 years old, single and might look like a 14-year-old boy after this" card, I am going to try and have you donate by putting this into perspective:

A coffee at Tim Hortons costs approximately $2 and if you're feeling adventurous, a latte at Starbucks costs approximately $5. If you're willing to give up ONE coffee on ONE occasion out of the entire year, and that is all you're able to afford, then please, donate the $2. Your $2 can prevent someone else in the future from having to be sat down in a doctor's office and be told that they have cancer. Your $2 can help the millions of people who are struggling with mental health and suicide. Your $2 can help a 21-year-old have the potential to continue doing the things he loves after the loss of a limb.

What else can you do? Show up the day of and support me going bald!

When:
Saturday, November, 25th @ 5:00 pm
Where: Local Jasper Ave (11228 Jasper Ave, Edmonton)

This is a very daunting experience and I would love the support from any and everyone (even if we have not met!). Please come out the day of, give me a hug and also participate in the head shaving: Any donations above $50 will be given the opportunity to handle the clippers and actually shave part of my head!

If at any point you have wanted to help with my journey, and you were not sure how: this is it. Thank you in advance for all of your support.

Things I love a lot: my hair.

Things I love even more: awareness and research for both mental health and cancer as well as the possibility of Ben being able to skate again.
