Jerry Bowen's fight against cancer

This is a story of my dad. His journey began almost 3 years ago (August 5, 2014 to be exact) while vacationing with his family at the beach. He wasn't feeling well and ended up at the ER the last night of vacation. A CT scan was performed showing an issue with the prostate which then led to say with possible metastasis to the bones. For any of you medical people out there, you know this is definitely not what you want to hear. We stayed up the entire night then drove home the next day. On our way home, we called his local NP to inform her he needed referred to a urologist and quickly. During that call, it was learned that his PSA was 469 (of course normal is 0). I was sure I misunderstood. So I called back for confirmation. Sure enough, it was right. (She had been treating him for a prostate infection prior to all of this.) We ended up at the ER that very day with dad being admitted with a series of test being performed. He went through surgery, known as TURP, to trim some of the prostate. We were told there was no need in removing the Prostate because it had already spread. We were given the news that our dad, husband, father In law, papaw, had Stage IV prostate cancer with metastasis to the bones after scans and surgery to confirm. We were all so scared and upset. Dad reassured us all, he was a fighter and he would beat this! After his first hormone injection his PSA dropped significantly. After his first chemo it was amazing how much it was dropping. He was responding so well. Fast forward through the next year. 13 chemo treatments later, he had been in remission! PRAISE GOD. It was then learned he had aortic valve troubles and he underwent aortic valve replacement in October of 2015. Again he was a trooper and pulled right through. Chemo was stopped at this point. After he recovered from the open heart surgery, he was started on a new hormone drug to keep the prostate cancer at bay. His PSA held its on for about a year without treatment. Amazing huh? Since last November the PSA has slowly been climbing and his urologist and oncologist have been trying to get him approved for a new treatment that according to them works amazing to fight prostate cancer. Only problem is the funding for the treatment. His insurance will pay up to 80%, but the other remaining is still way out of his budget. Last Tuesday, we learned that his platelet levels had dropped significantly while at his routine oncology visit. Dad hasn't been feeling well for a few weeks and myself and my sister accompanied him to the appt to talk about further treatment options. More blood work was performed. Fast forward to Friday night. Dad felt terrible. He was admitted to the hospital and a series of test have taken place. So far, we have learned that they are pretty sure the cancer is affecting the bone marrow, causing the low platelet counts. Also, they have found some new spots in different areas. We have been told this is all treatable. To God be the glory. Jerry, my dad, would give his last $1 to anyone in need, the shirt off his back, and will help anyone do anything! He's known by so many. So I'm asking, we are asking, for your help in getting the funds for necessary medical treatment for him. Anything is appreciated and we are forever grateful. The prayers, phone calls, visits are appreciated more than you all know. Just please continue to lift Jerry Bowen up in your prayers!
