My name is Olivia Martineau, and I am creating this Go-Fund Me for my mom, Jenny Martineau. My mom is currently in Stage 3 of Pancreatic Failure. Unfortunately, this means that her pancreas is causing more harm than good, and without any further actions her condition will worsen. While this is a chronic illness, our family has been offered a chance at her getting her life back with a new and quite extraneous procedure.
My mom was deemed a good candidate for the University of Minnesota’s “Total Pancreatectomy - Islet Auto-Transplant Program”. She will be having the procedure on January 11th, 2021, so in less than two months from the posting of this fund. With this procedural program, surgeons will completely remove her pancreas, her appendix, her spleen, and a great portion of her stomach and intestines, as with this chronic illness many of these organs have become diseased. This procedure is not your ordinary “transplant”. Islet cells are to be transplanted into my mom’s liver as a means of taking over insulin production, a key function to the working pancreas. My mom will also continue to have a J-tube, which is a port in the stomach where nutritional fluids will enter as a way of eating.
A big cost factor apart from this fund is that we are not from Minnesota. My family and I reside in Michigan, meaning we have traveled to Minnesota again as a last resort. The University of Minnesota Hospital is not only the most advanced for this procedure, but also one of the only hospitals to provide such procedure, so it is dire for my mom to receive treatment there. We are looking to stay at an Airbnb, as the hospital does not provide housing for patients for this specific procedure. My mom at minimum needs to stay in Minnesota for 2 months, and we do not have 2 months worth of funds for housing in addition to the cost of the procedure and in-hospital treatments post-operation.
This is my mom’s only chance at having a good quality of life, as for the past decade she has dealt with endless and severe chronic pain. While my mom is the strongest person I know, even fighters deserve breaks, and this is her chance at one, finally.
