Empowering Women in SE Asia
HOW I GOT HERE
I moved to SE Asia to follow a call to serve and empower individuals affected by exploitation. For 2 years I worked with organizations providing vocational training and support to those in need of opportunity in a city and industry that idolizes sex and exploits bodies with the promise of big money fast. Bars, go-go clubs, strip clubs, and brothels litter every street offering every fantasy imaginable. Men and women sell their bodies to strangers twice their age who don't speak their language to fulfill cultural & familial expectations to pay off debts and support their children and relatives.
It's a heavy place but over time, I found tremendous joy interacting with the students and developed incredible friendships. I witnessed so many men and women choose and find freedom from a job that instilled no value in their being. They left jobs at the bars to pursue education, work dreams, healthy relationships and ultimately, self-worth. Many also continue to work to this day, tied down by debt, lack of opportunity, and hopes of meeting a partner with a good heart to provide for them and their family. It's a heartbreaking and humbling place, and I'm forever grateful for the friends and family I found in the midst of much darkness.
WHAT I'M DOING NOW
I'm working in a new country supporting a partner organization that is also providing safe work for women through small business. I am helping with program development for a beauty program and setting up opportunities for further vocational training. I believe this work helps champion the fight against modern day slavery and continue to walk in gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside incredibly strong women seeking a dignified career.
