Jenn Miller - Lightning Strikes Twice

Donation protected
They say lightning doesn’t strike twice… unfortunately, that is not true.  It was only 3 years ago that we were devastated to receive news that my sister, Jenn Miller, an apprentice jockey at the time, had suffered a serious fall during a race.  She had a severe concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and a broken jaw that took 17 months and a variety of therapy to overcome.  With the generous and loving support of the equestrian community, Jenn made a full recovery and continued pursuing her passion to train and ride.

I write to ask for your support once again for my sister, my best friend, my inspiration.  While her first TBI could be considered a hazard of the job, this time it is only at the hand of her love of horses, these majestic creatures that can be beautiful, strong, and graceful, but also feisty and unpredictable.  On Thursday, December 10th after a leisurely ride in the Florida sun, Jenn went down when the horse she was riding got spooked and bolted off at top speed.  Onlookers tell me no rider would have been able to stay on him.  She was air-lifted to St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, FL.

Jenn has a broken nose and her second TBI, this time requiring surgery to drain the pooled blood on her brain.  As of yesterday, 12/13, doctors removed the drain and moved her from the ICU to a “step down” critical care unit and are generally pleased with her progress, but she is seeing some new swelling, in a lot of pain, and very weak.  We don’t know what the future holds or how long Jenn will be out of work.  What we do know is that the gap between medical bills and insurance coverage in these situations is huge, often insurmountable for many people on top of the costs of living.  Jenn needs our help, in any way or any amount, so she can focus on recovery.  Even if you can’t make a financial contribution, please share your words of encouragement – Jenn desperately needs to know she continues to have our support.

The beneficiary of this fundraiser is our mother, Barbara Mackintosh, who will be managing Jenn’s affairs during her recovery.
