Jenn's Story:
I am reaching out to you through this campaign on behalf of my sister Jenn Micek. Our dear Jenn is a single mother of three boys. She is smart, boisterous, stubborn and funny. Jenn is a friend to many and family to us Miceks.
On Thursday, May 25th she suffered a severe head injury after a fall from a moving recreational vehicle. She was transferred to the trama center at Regions Hospital in St. Paul where she has been in the ICU since. Jenn fractured her skull and required 13 staples to close her wound. From the fall, Jenn also had bleeding on the front of her brain which has thankfully stopped, but will result in symptoms for an extended period of time.
Due to the nature of her head injury, Jenn will be out of work and in recovery for several months once released from the hospital. She does have disability coverage, but after reviewing her finances this weekend we have found the coverage will not even pay for her full monthly rent bill. Beyond that she has expenses for her boys including daycare, along with additional household bills and personal expenses (groceries, insurance, etc) and of course the growing costs of her recovery at Regions.
If you are close to Jenn, you know how hard she has worked over the past year to put herself in a position to be on her own without assistance. She has been working multiple jobs when she didn't have the boys to continue to save for her apartment and to keep her boys in their many activities. Jenn had just moved into her own apartment earlier this month. The timing of this accident is tragic - we want to do everything we can to help her focus on her recovery throughout the summer (instead of where she is going to live and how to pay the large medical bills that this accident is bringing upon her).
Our Ask:
Many of you have reached out asking "how can I help?" This overwelming show of support has humbled us and we are very thankful for all of your thoughts and prayers.
Our family continues to focus on helping Jenn heal and transition out of the ICU and soon, home. As my Dad and I are very "type A" we can't help but look ahead and see the struggle beyond her injury that lays before her. Two ambulance rides and a week in the ICU is already estimated in the thousands after insurance payments.
We ask if it is in your means, please donate to this campaign to help support Jenn's expenses - specifically the mounting medical costs and to support her boys. As her family, we are focused on helping her in every way possible, but know enough to ask for help and we can't do it alone. Instead of gifts, flowers, balloons, etc; please consider a donation to help her stay on her feet while she recovers.
All of the funds raised by this campaign will go directly to Jenn's medical bills and costs of living. Any funds remaining after her bills are paid and she is back at work will be donated to the Regions Hospital Foundation directed to the HealthPartners Neuroscience Center Campaign. The staff at Regions, specifically the neuroscience staff of surgeons, doctors and nurses have been amazing and we are so thankful for their expertise, kindness and support. If the donations received exceed Jenn's needs, we plan to pay it forward and give back to those that have given so much to Jenn this week.
