Jefferson High Boys Soccer

Donation protected
As many of us collect our government relief checks, there's a population of people that isn't getting any help. They are English learners and first-generation students at Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas,  a city with one of the highest poverty rates in the nation.

I just wrote a story  about the 18 players on Jefferson's boys' soccer team, many of whom live in single-parent families struggling to pay their bills. My story explores how a local nonprofit leadership academy is helping these kids stay on track to go to college.

But coronavirus is making this nearly impossible. Many of the boys' parents work as cooks, cleaners, and construction workers and have lost their jobs because of COVID-19. As a result, these kids' ability to access higher education -- which looked promising just two months ago -- is in jeopardy.

I was inspired by these boys, who could really use your help right now. I'm raising money to help the neediest of these students and their families buy groceries, pay their rent and utilities, and help their children afford college this fall.

One of the most inspiring boys I met was Fernando Osorio, who was raised in a Honduran orphanage and could hardly speak English when he moved here in 2014.

With help from the Urban Soccer Leadership Academy, Fernando now speaks fluent English and has blossomed into a star player. Last year, he made the state and regional Olympic Development teams, with a chance to try out for the national soccer team. College coaches are clamoring for him to play for them. But there's little money in college soccer, and Fernando's immigration status prevents him from receiving federal aid.

Your contribution will help Fernando, his teammates, and their families as they try to make ends meet in this difficult time. The money will go toward their immediate financial needs and to help these kids stay on track to go to college. I would appreciate any contribution you can make, and will personally make sure your money gets in the hands of the students and families who need it the most.
