Jeff Hornsby's Medical Fund

Through my work with the Chapman Community Health Program at the FSU College of Medicine, a collegiate and community partnership focused on serving underrepresented communities in Tallahassee, FL, I have had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Mr. Jeff Hornsby. Jeff is a leader of our mission, an inspiration to our endeavors, and most recently, an uninsured victim of cancer. I have made this page to support this dear friend.

For nearly two decades, Jeff has completely dedicated himself to the service of others by combating hunger, homelessness, and isolation within the Tallahassee community. Jeff is the housing director of Maryland Oaks Crossing, a local low-income housing community that my organization has partnered with, that is part of the greater Good News Outreach program. I am fortunate to have met such an advocate for humanism. Through his willingness and support, CCHP has accomplished insurmountable success at caring for the underserved. Every day, Jeff gives all his effort and all his love to the Maryland Oaks Crossing community, Good News Outreach, and beyond.

Recently, Jeff was diagnosed with stage IV squamous cell carcinoma of the epiglottis, with bilateral localized lymphatic metastasis.  If he begins combination radiation and chemotherapy treatment immediately, he stands today with a predicted 70% cure rate. Jeff is resilient, optimistic, and ever smiling. While he was taken aback by this diagnosis, his faith remains strong in the hands of his Higher Power, Jesus Christ.

Jeff was recently approved for support in the cost of his treatment by a local charitable organization, We Care Network, dedicated to providing a safety net to uninsured patients in need of specialty medical care. The cost of treatments weighed heavy on Jeff’s mind and while this has greatly eased his worries, Jeff will still face costs related to his diagnosis and treatment—transport, food instability, rent, and other cost of living expenses that may become burdensome once Jeff will have to stop working due to treatments.  In order to qualify for We Care, Jeff had to take a significant reduction in salary, making daily expenses even more difficult to cover. Jeff has given his life to the service of others, and now I ask for others to help serve and support his life.

I ask that you please give whatever you can, big or small, to the aid of this gentleman and member of our College of Medicine community. Every donation will go to costs related to Jeff's medical expenses, including cost of living when he will no longer be able to work because of treatments. In the event that there is money left over, Jeff has asked that this money be donated to the Chapman Community Health Program and Good News Outreach to continue to better the lives of the residents of Maryland Oaks Crossing. Thank you!
