When Jeanne Smith Martin recently lost her Significant Other of seven+ years, she was reminded, once again, of just how expensive death can be. She faced the loss of her partner with courage and stoicism, doing all she could to ease his exit from this life. Now, in addition to terrible grief, she faces debts way beyond what she is able to pay. And she faces fear as well, for the grandchildren who’d shared a household with her deceased partner and now have no way to pay the rent.
We who have been Jeanne’s friends for half a century (or even longer) know she takes care of everyone — family, immediate and extended; neighbors and friends; even her local colony of feral cats. And, time after time, we have observed how she persists in her care-taking without regard for herself, her serious health challenges, or the inevitable financial shortfalls that result from them. But at this point she needs help.
For decades, the Mt. Eden High School Class of 1968 has enjoyed regular reunions, few realizing that the main force behind these gatherings was Jeanne, who spent hundreds of hours on the phone or writing emails and snail mails, trying to connect with ALL her classmates and persuade them to come together in celebration of our collective spirit. Next year, 2018, will be our 50-year reunion. Will we celebrate then?
Jeanne has always worked to unite us. Now we need to come together on our own in support of her. In this Giving Season 2017, let us show our gratitude, for all she has done for so many, and our compassion, in sympathy for all she has had to endure.
