Jean's FFS Recovery Fund

Hey Everyone,

I have really big news to share. This Wednesday (1/22), I'm scheduled to undergo facial feminization surgery (FFS), which is a series of medically necessary facial procedures to undo the extended effects of having a testosterone-fueled puberty. As many of you know, I have identified as non-binary for the past 6 years, and this surgery is a crucial step in terms of helping ease my gender dysphoria and addressing some of the real safety issues I face as a non-passing genderqueer person everyday.

Physical and verbal violence are common, daily experiences to me as a trans and genderqueer person. Four years ago, I was formally diagnosed with PTSD after surviving an armed mugging and hate-fueled assault that left me blacked out on the concrete with significant bruises. The incredible stress and safety planning that goes into my day-to-day is almost indescribable. Even commuting to work and home via BART can be a terrifying ordeal because of the amount of harassment I face. The unpredictability of being genderqueer while the livelihoods and humanity of trans people are subject to open debate is incredibly traumatic. Seeking FFS is more than just about feeling at home in my body -- it's also about alleviating the social violence that trans people endure.

I am fortunate that the major costs of my surgery have been covered, but I still am seeking from you all with helping funding my recovery period after I endure 12 hours of facial surgery. FFS is an intricate and complicated invasive procedure, which will leave me needing to take off significant time off my job to fully rest and recover.

Although I had originally been given a surgery date of August 22nd for my surgery, I took the opportunity on Thursday the 16th to receive an earlier surgery date of January 22nd due to a cancellation. Because I will enter surgery with less than a week's notice, I am left way under-prepared in every sense, especially financially. Contributing toward this goal will help me significantly with handling my living expenses, copay and bills while I am recovering from intensive surgery.

I am extremely blessed with a very supportive network of friends and community. My surgeon, Dr. Kleinberger, is one of the most experienced and skilled surgeons in the country specializing in FFS. I am confident this is the next move I need in order to go forward with my life and reduce the amount of daily violence that I face as a trans non-binary person.

I am deeply grateful for any help or support that you can provide during this whole process. My close friend Chay has also created a meal-train linked here , for those who inquire about alternative forms of providing support. For those who prefer to donate via Venmo, my username is @sadfemme. Thanks so much for hearing me out.

Warmly,

Jean
