Jean Dorosh Hurricane Harvey Relief

Hi, my name is Jo-Anna Dorosh-Lawson, I am from the Houston, Texas area and this fundraiser is for my sister Jean "Bean" Dorosh.  Her neighborhood and home were flooded during Hurricane Harvey.  

She is a social worker at a local hospital and was working during the hurricane.  Since she is single and has no children she volunteered to work so others with children could be home with their families.  

A neighbor had been looking in on her dog while she was at work.  As the storm progresssed, the neighborhood and homes began to flood.  Her neighbor who was caring for her dog, needed to evacuate.  It is my understanding, the unexpected flooding occurred in part, due to non functioning pumps, which usually aid in the drainage of the neighborhood.  

The streets in her neighborhood, as well as surrounding roads became flooded and were not passable.  My husband attempted to get to her home to resucue her dog King on Sunday evening, but the roads were too flooded,  he could not even get out of our development.  
 
The next day, the waters had receded on our property and some of the surrounding roadways, and my husband was able to drive to the entrance of my sisters subdivision.  Once there, he then needed to proceed on foot, wading through the flood waters, which at its peak levels were chest high.  He arrived at my sisters home, to discover water had entered her home and garage, damaging the flooring, furniture, drywall, appliances, kitechen cabinetry, bathroom vanities,  as well as many personal items.  The good news is, he was able to rescue her dog King at this time, and he has been with us safe and dry since. 

She reported to work on Saturday, and due to the severity of the weather conditions, she was mandated to stay until yesterday, Tuesay August 29th, 2017.  Upon her release from work, the roads in her development were still impassable, so she had to wade through the floodwaters on foot to make it to her home to asscess the damage and salvage a few personal items that had yet to be damaged.  The photo above, was taken yesterday, August 29th, 2017.  This is what her property looked like, after the floodwater had receded. Since her home is not in a flood zone, she does not have flood insurance.  

I had asked my husband to send me some photos of her home while they were there.  At first glance, my heart sank, as I looked at the damage and the material loss.  The next thing that caught my eye, was a large plaque on the wall which displayed the following words:  

    There is always, always, always, something to be thankful for. 

     My hope and prayer, is that today and during the days to come, my sister and all  who have been affected by the devastating effects of this storm can find something in each day to be truly thankful for.  I also hope and pray they are surrounded by love and support, and find comfort, peace, hope, strength and courage, today and the days ahead as they rebuild their lives.
