Jonathan's House for Orphans is a small nonprofit organization operating in Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic. I've had the honor of working with JCC in Sierra Leone for the past 9 years, visiting annually and coordinating our sponsorship and outreach programs.
I am returning to Sweet Mama Salone this February for a short visit with my brother Jesse, my husband John, Jesse's partner Alex and a friend, Jeremy! Jesse and John have traveled with me multiple times while Alex and Jeremy are traveling to my second home for the very first time! We are so excited to be in Salone, seeing old friends and building new relationships.
In 2016, we funded and helped install a solar power lighting system, bringing electric light to the orphanage compound for the first time ever! These lights allow the children to study at night and help them steer clear of dangerous kerosene lamps and environmentally toxic and expensive generators. This trip, we will be fundraising to upgrade and update that solar system. We have a local estimate of about $4100 for new solar panels, batteries, and converters. To fully upgrade the electrical wiring system will cost another $700. Adding in transport and unexpected expenses, we anticipate a full solar upgrade being possible for about $5000. If we can raise more than $5000, we'll be able to contribute to a project improving the water and sanitation at the compound as well!
We pay our own travel and lodging expenses, so any donations go 100% to the work being done at our orphanage and school. The more funding we can take over, the more we can accomplish during our visit and beyond. While we appreciate donations of materials to send over, taking monetary donations allows us to invest in the local economy, purchase locally made goods, use culturally and environmentally appropriate materials, and employ local workers.
