So I spent the majority of my life working in the hospitality industry. I wound up with a dependence on alcohol. In that social circle neither myself or anyone else questioned my drinking. Long story short, this took a toll on my health. Specifically my liver. A couple years ago I was diagnosed with cirrhosis. Even with the diagnosis it proved difficult to quit drinking. I had managed to quit hard alcohol a few years ago, but continued drinking beer, which I was finally able to quit months ago. Unfortunately in the time it took, my cirrhosis has progressed to a critical level. My wife and I had already started having tearful discussions about what she should do when I pass away. We had just about given up hope that I would even be submitted as a candidate in a transplant program. I am desperately in need of a transplant. I have a primary care doctor as well as a Gastrointestinal doctor. I have followed their instructions and was informed recently by my GI doctor that he will be submitting me to a transplant program. I will have to undergo many tests and a review by the hospital's medical board to be out on the list for a transplant. My doctors tell me that they believe I'm an excellent candidate for this. The average cost of a liver transplant is $600,000. Insurance should cover the majority of these costs, hopefully. My wife, Shannon, and I live paycheck to paycheck like many of you. I have been unable to work for quite some time due to my condition, doctor and hospital stays and the medications I take. We are not ones to ask for handouts, but in this case we will have medical expenses as well as money my wife will lose having to take time from work. I love my wife more than anything and would like to have a long life with her and perhaps children in the near future. We are only asking for you to contribute a few dollars, if you can afford it, and to pass this information along. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
