Please Help Us Save Charlie

Hi, my name is Mario & I’m hoping to raise enough money to save my dog, Charlie. Charlie is a purebred Chocolate Labrador Retriever, who is six years & nine months old. He’s the most gentle, fun-loving, & loyal dog I have ever had. Everyone who meets Charlie, loves Charlie.

Around 3yrs ago, Charlie gradually started hurting himself more & more frequently. He’d get hurt if he went up/down stairs, or out walking, jumping in/out of the car - things he’s always done that never bothered him before, had recently become so troublesome that it would lame him for a few days. Charlie has always been an active dog who absolutely LOVED going for long walks, rain or shine.

So, we had to make adjustments when it came to Charlie. We no longer took him for hours long walks, we got a stepper to get in/out of the car, we didn’t play fetch anymore because we didn’t want to risk him getting hurt, etc.

We took him to the vet when he had still another episode even after all of these changes in his lifestyle. The vet prescribed the usual standard meds (gabapentin, carprofen) that he’s taken several times before when he hurt himself. After researching ‘lameness’ & ‘elbow dysplasia’ we came upon an ad online for Synovetin OA nuclear medicine/procedure in a syringe right into the affected elbows… in Charlie’s case, both elbows. The effects of the procedure could last up to a whole year, after which, it could be given again. Researching the Synovetin OA, we thought this was the answer to our prayers & quickly made an appointment for a consult with the orthopedic veterinary surgeon at one of the few locations that offer this procedure. We were told Charlie was a good candidate. We researched previous cases & found the success rate for this procedure was quite high, & a good percentage of the patients were still doing well after the 12 month mark with just the one shot.

My mom took out a loan & Charlie had his procedure the end of March 2023, less than 6 months ago. For the first 4 months, Charlie seemed to be ok - not great - although more active, he was still limping. Unfortunately, Charlie will limp for the rest of his life as it was told to us. He has advanced degenerative osteoarthritis in both knees, one, worse than the other, & it’s a genetic condition. However, we were told to exercise him (slowly at first). Last month (July), Charlie began limping a little more pronounced, so we cut down the length of the walks. 2 weeks ago, we took him on a standard & uneventful walk Thursday evening & by early Friday morning he couldn’t stand, let alone walk. His left leg was so swollen.

Charlie went back to the orthopedic vet a few days ago, had x-rays done, but the ortho vet said there’s no break or sprain & didn’t know what’s going on with him. Vet said it could be an infection, cancer in his leg, or a sudden acute arthritic episode in his elbow joint. Vet suggested a CT scan from his elbows to his paws. What we’re trying to do is raise enough money for a CT scan (3k to 4k) but also, ultimately, total elbow arthroplasty (replacement) in both of Charlie’s front legs (between 1,500k -3k (low estimate to 4-6k (high estimate) (per elbow).

While the swelling has greatly improved, Charlie still cannot stand for more than a few minutes & holds his left foot aloft as he is unable to put any pressure on it at all. I carry him outside and set him down in the garden so he can do his business. We bring his food/water to him so he can eat & drink. Even with all the pain Charlie is in now, he still greets me & each one of us - with a ferociously wagging tail, a big smile, & a bright & happy disposition.

Please help us save Charlie, we cannot afford it on our own. Without your help, we will have no choice than to put our beloved dog to sleep rather than him living in severe pain.
