Jayne's walking up Church Hill 100 times!

I am Jayne Nicholls, the sister of Paul Ridd, a wonderful gentleman who died in 2009 in Morriston Hospital Swansea, at the age of 55. Paul had severe learning disabilities and the Public Service Ombudsman’s report into the circumstances surrounding his death said that neglect, lack of training and ignorance were contributory factors leading to Paul’s death.  The Paul Ridd Foundation was created to support adults with a learning disability, and their families and carers, when accessing secondary healthcare.

Since 2017 we have campaigned tirelessly for equality of healthcare for these vulnerable people.  The Care bundle for adults with a learning disability was developed as a legacy to Paul, we have trained over 2000 Learning disability Champions within the NHS in Wales, and we regularly train nursing students at Swansea University and the University of South Wales.  Since Paul’s death the number of learning disability liaison nurses within the NHS in Wales has increased from 2-18, and in November 2019 we were successful in our campaign to have learning disability awareness training for all staff within the NHS to become mandatory.  We are currently in the process of creating Family & Carer packs as a resource full of information, to further empower these vulnerable patients and their families and carers.

We are a small, totally self-funded charity and we receive NO monies from government at all.  Every penny that we raise comes from the generosity of our amazing supporters.  This year, like a lot of smaller charities it has been impossible for us to raise any funds, so…….

My challenge

During the month of May 2021, I will be walking 100 times up Church hill in Baglan.  I have lived in this area for over 30+ years and in this time have probably walked up it less than a dozen times, so this is going to be a real challenge!  I would love people to join me, (socially distanced of course) so check out our Facebook page for details of when I will be walking each day, and to follow my progress.

Please share this page and give generously thank you!
