Jayenne's Third Grade iPad Campaign

Jayenne Elementary is nestled in the city of Fairmont in Marion County. Our school is made up of 100% free and reduced lunch. It serves students who speak six different languages consisting of English, Chinese Mandarin, Chinese Traditional, Arabic, Spanish, and Gujarati. Therefore, our school strives to provide a diverse learning environment to prepare our students for the demands of the 21st century. The goal of this campaign is to instill a love for technology and empower students' learning through the use of iPads.
The campaign being proposed is the Introduction of STEM to Diverse Third Grade Learners. During the course of this project, students will work on STEM applications based on their individual abilities. Our focus will be introducing our learners to all aspects of STEM through technology. Therefore, our request of fifteen iPads and the necessary accessories is of great importance to our campaign goals.

Exposing 75 diverse third grade learners to Apple technology with an introduction to the components of STEM innately includes inquiry into the field of computer science and project-based learning. The students will use several applications to create projects individually and in group settings. Learning computer science is a real-world skill due to the growing need for STEM professionals. Sparking the interest in science, technology, engineering, and math at a young age can assist in creating excitement about STEM fields.
This third grade project that we would like to execute for our diverse learners will be a three month unit designed to introduce these learners to all basic aspects of STEM. The students will complete several third grade appropriate iPad based projects that will not only be creative and hands-on, but will challenge them to become real-world problem solvers. The timeline being used is as follows:
Through the month of September and October of 2017, the students will embark on an introduction to computer science and coding as the technological component of STEM. The students will utilize the website https://code.org/ and various other engaging coding applications for children. This portion of the project will be partially self-paced independent learning.
Through the month of November 2017, the students will develop a science movie showcasing their engineering of wheel and axle systems. This project will be the science, math, and engineering aspects of STEM. The students will create their movie using the Stop Motion iPad application. This portion of the project will be completed in small groups to promote collaboration and creative thinking among peers.

During the month of December 2017, the focus will be on making real-world connections to computer science through the use of guest speakers, both in person and vis the Skype application.
Upon completion of our STEM project, these iPads will then be utilized to enhance everyday instruction. Access to technology is crucial while preparing students for West Virginia's state assessment.
Having ample technology at our fingertips is crucial to today's 21st century instruction. Unfortunately, our school board/school does not have the funds readily available to provide such vital technology devices for the hands of our many digital natives...our students. Our third grade team feels that we can enrich the lives of our students through this iPad campaign. That is why we are reaching out to donors who value education as much as we do.
