JaxDog Café & Books Needs YOU!

To our friends and loyal customers:

Many of you know about the disaster that struck our business in downtown La Grande, Oregon during Thanksgiving week 2018. For those who haven't heard – this is what happened:

On the night of Black Friday, the suspended wooden ceiling of our building collapsed. The destruction and its aftermath rendered it impossible for us to reopen, so we made the difficult decision to move all of our kitchen equipment, furniture and books into storage.

We couldn’t have done this without your help…so many of you pitched in and alleviated the stress of the situation in more ways than you’ll ever know.

After the initial shock, we were left feeling displaced and devastated, unable to provide great food, coffee and literature in the community we love.

In the months since, our time has been devoted to searching for another space to create a harmonious blend of the café and bookstore with a laid-back and comfortable atmosphere. A place for people to meet, relax and savor the simple things. Now we have the opportunity to rebuild and reinvent JaxDog Café & Books.

We found a new home at 1305 Adams Avenue and with a bit of reconfiguration this location is exactly what we need. Construction has begun and we are so grateful to the building owners for their openness and enthusiasm for our business.

The major expenses we are incurring include the purchase and installation of a commercial hood system to give Jon greater flexibility in preparing a variety of unique dishes. We are also switching to a gas range and oven, charbroiler and larger refrigeration unit. Gas line work is involved, in addition to carpentry. The total estimated cost of this equipment, installation, renovations and labor is $35,000.

We have poured our hearts and souls into this venture and it is our only source of income since Laura left her job in 2017 to join Jon as his full-time business partner.

In order to get started on the project, we have taken on a loan. Our hope is to reopen in the summer and we are asking for your help again in achieving this new beginning.

We want to make what we had even better and you can be part of the transformation. Any donations you can provide in support of our reopening are greatly appreciated. We will continue to share updates with you as things move forward.

Thank you!
