Ensure Women's Voices Are Heard

Tax deductible
We're the Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS), and we're raising money to bring 10 early-career female journalists to this year's Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) in Essex, Vermont.

We need your help!

Watch the video below to learn more about our annual fellowship program and to meet this year's JAWS fellows.

JAWS is dedicated to helping women succeed in journalism in order to ensure a full and accurate picture of society. Toward that end, we are passionate about mentoring newly-minted female journalists. We help them connect with mid-career and veteran journalists; strategize about their options in the rapidly changing media landscape; build personal brands; strengthen core skills; and improve the status of women in journalism. And we learn from them about the latest and greatest in journalism technologies, topics, and trends.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER? Consider this:

*Fewer than 30% of reporters and news room editors are women.

*Men shape our national dialogue, reporting on roughly 67% of stories on politics/government, 65% of stories on crime/violence, and 60% of stories on the economy.

*By a nearly 3 to 1 margin, male front-page bylines at top newspapers outnumbered female bylines in coverage of the 2012 presidential election. Men were also far more likely to be quoted than women in newspapers, television, and public radio. That's also the case in coverage of abortion, birth control, Planned Parenthood, and women's rights!

*On Sunday TV talk shows, one survey found that only 25 percent of guests were female. Another study found women comprised only 14 percent of those interviewed and 29 percent of roundtable guests. There was some overlap among the shows tracked in the two studies.

*In both legacy and online news sites, women are too often relegated to writing about the "pink topics" of food, family, furniture and fashion.

Bottom Line: A vibrant democracy depends on a balanced and diverse depiction of that democracy. By encouraging the advancement of women in the media industry, JAWS helps promote that balance and diversity.

What is CAMP?

Each year, JAWS CAMP focuses on strengthening core journalism skills, building personal brands and careers, developing strategies for success in today's rapidly evolving media landscape, and improving the status of women in journalism. This October, fellowship winners and other CAMP participants will enjoy a dynamic experience filled with inspiring speakers -- including New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson -- motivating career development sessions, and rewarding networking and mentoring opportunities.

For more about CAMP, watch our video.

Here's what some of our 2012 JAWS Fellows had to say about their fellowship experience at last year's CAMP in Albuquerque, NM:

"CAMP was the embodiment of inspiration -- from the wild, golden backdrop of New Mexico to each conversation I had with a woman journalist striving to tell the right story. Networking and mentorship aren't the right words here -- it's a place for people who actually want to listen, learn and empower. What could possibly help produce a better journalist?"

-- Ankita Rao, Kaiser Health News

"JAWS was a wonderful opportunity for me to meet journalists from around the country who show all the different paths you can take in the industry. I was able to network with women at news outlets where I had an interest in working, and I picked up pointers on how to negotiate. But perhaps most importantly, I made new friends and had a break from my daily routine, which allowed me to recharge."

-- Molly A. K. Connors, The Concord Monitor

"Attending CAMP as a fellow last year was exceptionally helpful in my career: the chance to swap skills with so many fascinating journalists at all stages of their careers, gaining a mentor who I still consult with on freelance and job questions, and -- probably most importantly -- being part of such frank, and sorely-needed discussions about gender in our profession."

-- Lygia Navarro, Freelance Magazine and Radio Journalist

Past JAWS fellows have gone on to careers as photographers, reporters, editors, and producers all around the country. They're working at places like U.S. News & World Report, the Chicago Tribune, PBS, National Geographic, LinkedIn, and The Washington Post. Four of the current JAWS board members, including our President-Elect Lauren Whaley, joined our organization as fellows. All of these women have taken their JAWS CAMP experience and built a future for themselves, moving the needle ahead for women in journalism.
