On May 10, 2017, aired an episode of the CW's post-apocalyptic show "The 100" that made the hearts of the audience drop - 16 year old Jasper Jordan, beautifully portrayed by Devon Bostick, found a tragic end in the arms of his best friend due to an overdose after suffering from severe PTSD for a majority of the show. Thousands of viewers had followed his emotional journey, hoping for a story of healing and recovery, when Jasper was promised in the Season 3 finale by his best friend that "We will be happy again." Thus the more heartbroken we all were when we watched this beautiful character take his own life.
Compelling storylines for mentally ill characters in media are scarce and hardly ever have a positive outcome. Suicide is still the No. 1 choice of writers and producers when it comes to ending the story of a mentally ill character. This sends an incredibly harmful message to viewers: "If you're mentally ill and struggling with suicidal thoughts, give in to them. It won't get better anyway."
But we won't stand for this anymore. We won't accept that our rare representation in media is discarded like that over and over again. Just because it is harder to write a convincing story of learning to live with a mental illness, doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. We turn to TV shows and movies to make us feel better, to inspire us, to give us hope. Our stories need to be told -- and our fight is far from over.
In the wake of Jasper Jordan's death, a character whose heartfelt and raw story of trauma and pain inspired many, we want to make a change in the real world and raise money for the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) . This international nonprofit organization is a leader in education, training, and research for anxiety, OCD, PTSD, depression, and other related disorders. Please donate and help this cause for a better tomorrow for people suffering from a mental illness. Every amount helps.
Our struggle is not a sad side note in someone else's story. We deserve love, support, and healing.
In honor of Jasper Jordan.
