My brother Jason is an Iraq war verteran and on December 20th he received a devastating injury to his esophagus. He threw up 3 times and was in excrutiating pain so my mom took him to Latrobe hospital.  They did a ct scan and found air in his chest cavitiy. Not knowing how it got there, they put him on a ventilator and life flighted him to Presby. There they found out that he perforated his esophagus and aspirated. They went through the best case scenerio and worst case scenerio.  When the surgeon came in he also told us that my brother had deteriorated from the time he left Latrobe to the time he got to Presby.  He also said that the anesthesiologist didn't really want to put him under because his left lung looked "really sick".  Dr. Pennathur said they had to go in and at least clean his chest out or he wouldn't survive. After almost 8hrs of surgery we received devastating news. It was a lot worse than originally thought and the mortality rate for his type of injury was very high. His esophagus had a hole in it close to his stomach and infection was already settling into his chest. The next 48 hours were critical. We prayed day and night and God pulled my brother through the toughest part.  After a week in ICU and a couple more weeks in a regular hospital room he came home. He has several tubes still in him and hasn't been allowed to eat or drink this whole time only through his feeding tube. He has lost around 40lbs and is extremely weak. He has no prescription coverage and medical bills are starting to come in. We would greatly appreciate anything you can give. Money, prayer or simply passing this along. Thank you and God Bless!!
