Gary Lucas here, fundraising to help cover medical and living expenses for my dear friend Jason Candler, who recently suffered a series of debilitating strokes which came out of nowhere last Tuesday April 6th. Jason is one of my oldest and closest friends, having played saxophone in my band Gods and Monsters and in my Chinese music ensemble as well as recording my work over many years. He and his wife Lily and their 18-month old son Jakob are in a precarious position now because Jason's medical insurance is not going to cover all of the very high costs of his current hospitalization and eventual move into an assisted living rehabilitation center, as well as his family's day to day cost of living in NYC, while Jason recovers from this unfortunate and unforseeable tragedy. I visited Jason today at Mount Sinai Medical Center here in Manhattan. He recently came out of a medically-induced coma for emergency cerebral surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain. The good news is he can talk and move a little bit and he seemed in reasonably good spirits, and the prognosis for his recovery is positive. He is a very strong person and I expect him to make it--but he's not fully out of the danger zone yet. It's not certain how long he will have to stay in the hospital at this point, nor how long his live-in rehabilitation is going to take before he can resume working again. Therefore I urge all of you who receive this and whose lives Jason has touched--and there are so many of you!--to please step forward and pitch in generously whatever you can to help take some of the financial pressure off of Jason and his family while he begins his long road to recovery.
