Today, I would like to introduce you to Jasmine, born February 4, 1997 and meeting the world with grace and beauty ever since. The sound of music found this young woman’s sweet tapping toes at the age of four and kept her bounding across the stage for the next twelve years as an Irish dancer. It also followed her home off the stage as solace for her sensitive and introspective spirit , in the sound of her fingers strumming the chords of her guitar, or moving elegantly from one piano key to the next as her voice filled the air. Her mother Alina, who struggled to raise her daughter on her own with very little support, was never far away from Jasmine’s beautiful smile--a smile that matched her own..
Their journey, though never easy, has to date been filled with the joy of giving and helping.. Alina, who graduated from the College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan, supported them both as a single mother on a teacher’s salary. With a true understanding of what it means to know hardship, Alina taught Jasmine to be the best she could be while at the same time volunteering side by side at soup kitchens, working with special needs respite groups, or helping the people in their community get through challenges with mental health and addictions. Jasmine, having learned well from her mother, has ventured out in her own kind way as well, leaving Alina at home while she travelled from Saskatoon to Calgary to assist in wrapping one thousand gifts destined for children in Africa. Jasmine’s kindness is evident not only in her acts but in her thoughtfulness; for example, when she receives money for Christmas she often spends it on others as it brings her joy to see others treating themselves.
Of course, things are not always easy for the most generous souls, and Alina has had to stand strong as she walked her daughter through an abusive relationship that left her with PTSD. But with Alina at her side, Jasmine found her grace and depth once again on the yoga floor, and has continued to treat everyone with kindness and respect regardless of their life choices.
But of all the challenges Jasmine has faced, this year has proven to be the toughest. It began with the energy draining from her body, followed by black dots and flashes of colour impeding her vision. Her body started to ache and her left side began to tingle.. Then her face, teeth and throat also began to tingle and her head started to ache. Multiple visits to the doctor and many MRI’s have led to the discovery of a large lesion at the top of Jasmine’s spine, another on her corpus callosum and two on her temporal lobes. A painful spinal tap revealed a Vitamin B12 deficiency and inflammation of her central nervous system as well. Just two weeks ago, Alina and Jasmine got the news they were dreading: that Jasmine has Multiple Sclerosis. MS is defined as an attack on one’s central nervous system by their immune system, affecting their brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.
Jasmine and Alina are handling this news as always, with their combined strength, proactive attitude and positive spirits. They have been using their extended health benefits
(naturopath/acupuncture/therapeutic massage/physiotherapy/chiropractic) to get Jasmine the extra care she needs to walk with this debilitating disease, but they need our help. Soon, those much needed benefits will be used up and they will need our help to supply Jasmine with the supplements, physiotherapy and care she needs to combat the disease.
Jasmine and Alina have shown us what it means to be kind, generous and giving souls in this world. Please click the link below to return their love and support them on this journey.
