Jasmine’s Brain Surgery

My daughter’s name is Jasmine Marie Wood. She is 19 years old and has suffered from seizures since she was an infant. The first generalized (grand-mal) seizure she had was as at 4 months of age. From then, most of her life, she has experienced partial-complex seizures. Since then, she had another big generalized seizure at age 4 and three more during February 2018, which has left her with more memory issues. These seizures occur 3-4 times a month. None of the anti-seizure medications helped her. Her disorder takes a huge toll on her body, mentally, physically, emotionally, and psychologically. This neurological disorder has greatly impacted her life.
The little things that most people take for granted in life are the things that she struggles with and wishes to conquer. She doesn’t remember simple things such as, if she took her medicine, things I bought her, if she completed her school assignments, school studies, daily conversations, movies she’s watched, etc. Her memory fails her as she has to re-learn all of her studies in school. She also loses her appetite and cannot eat much. She is not able to obtain her driver’s license, considering she’s an adult. She needs to be supervised at all times because of her seizures. These seizures begin during her sleep at night and it prevents her from getting the rest that she needs. Every birthday, special occasion, family gatherings, her prom, her sweet sixteen…all of those moments were stolen and taken away by her seizures. I cannot remember a joyous time in her life without her seizures interfering.
Her high school years were also affected by her seizures. Her memory and lack of energy became prominent. But, as the fighter that she is, she still strived and achieved her straight A’s. Her doctors are all amazed with her high academics considering her neurological disorder. Her first year of college was even more difficult because her seizures took a turn for the worse. She has decided to take online courses for this year because her seizures are interfering with her studies. She ended up having three huge generalized seizures February 2018 and wound up hitting her head pretty hard on numerous occasions. She landed in the ER and finally got her referral over to UCSF. After years and years of EEG’s, the doctors at UCSF finally captured where her seizures are coming from because she finally had seizures while being monitored. They did numerous MRI’s and tests and finally recommended to perform a Temporal Lobectomy for her brain surgery.
I am hoping this surgery can help reduce her seizures or better, yet, help her become seizure free. Even with all of the different anti-seizure medications that she’s tried, none of them helped stop her seizures. She is a very smart, bright young girl; however, she feels her seizures set her back, even though at the end of the day, she fights through all of her battles. Her dream is to become a neurosurgeon and most of her life, she’s been told that it’s impossible. How is she supposed to perform surgery on a neurological patient when she herself has seizures? Being told that it is impossible to become a neurosurgeon only empowers her even more to achieve her dream. No person should feel that they cannot do something because they have a certain disorder.
Jasmine is one of the most selfless, giving, and caring persons I know. She is known to put others first and make them happy before herself. She goes above and beyond for everyone that she encounters without ever expecting anything in return. Even on her days when she is feeling her worst, she always has a smile and finds a way to be appreciative in her life.
Her recovery will be extensive and medical bills are already becoming overwhelming. We’re asking for your help to ease her burden, and to show her that even though this journey has only just begun, she’ll always have our support.
