Over the past several years Jared has volunteered 100's of hours to make our communities safer. The results have been amazing and it's time we help him continue his work.
Jared's Story
On January 13th of 1989 twelve-year-old Jared Scheierl was abducted, sexually assaulted and then released. Ten months later Jacob Wetterling was abducted and never came home. Following Jacob’s disappearance Jared tirelessly worked with authorities on detailed sketches, looking at lineups of possible suspects, reciting car details - the process was physically and mentally exhausting. So much so, that Jared’s family moved to the neighboring town of Paynesville so he could start a new life.
It's been long journey for Jared but three and half years ago he made a very positive change. He became proactive in his own case. At this time he learned of multiple cases in the Paynesville area that were similar to his.
Because he had lived in Paynesville for most of his life he was able to locate and identify many of the victims. When he brought this information to law enforcement he was told that they did not have the time or resources to help.
So he proceeded forward on his own continuing to research and investigate the numerous cases while working with local media outlets to raise awareness. Eventually authorities took notice and it led to the arrest of Danny Heinrich – Jared’s abductor. This arrest recently made national attention as Heinrich also confessed to the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of Jacob Wetterling. Jared’s work was directly credited solving the 27-year-old case.
This entire process not only had an emotional toll on Jared but he has also missed a significant amount of work and some financial relief would help lift one of his burdens as he continues to raise awareness.
