Jan's Story
In 2013, Jan was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Multiple Myeloma. At the time her and her family were living in Stafford, VA where she received her 1st stem cell transplant at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital. She was in the hospital for 3 months for her treatments but was close to her family which enabled them visit with her often.
In early 2016, Jan was informed that her cancer had returned, except this time a she required a donor stem cell transplant. Seeking the best medical care for her, the Dixon family learned of a trial treatment at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, NY. This treatment would require an allogenic stem cell transplant. After 9 days of aggressive chemotherapy to completely eliminate her own bone marrow, the process of transplanting her sisters bone marrow had begun.
Unlike the first treatment, Jan will have to remain in close proximity to her doctors and will be staying at the Hope House in NY for at least 100 days. She will need full time care and surveillance in case there are any difficulties with the transplant. The Dixon family now lives in Connecticut and Jan is about 2 hours from her family which makes it more difficult and costlier for them to visit as often as they would like. This also makes it harder for the family to provide the 24 hour care she needs.
The purpose of this GoFundMe is to help the Dixon family hire a full time care giver for as long as possible to stay with Jan at the Hope House in New York. The cost is roughly $200 a day which is not covered by insurance. We are hoping to be able to provide Jan with as much round the clock care as we can until she is cleared to move back home.
About Jan:
Jan is 44 years old and has been married to her husband, Andrew Dixon for 23 years. They have 4 kids, Ashley (21), Whitney (15), Conner (13), Tyler (10). As a military family, they Dixon’s have lived all over the world but they now call East Hampton, CT home. Jan is an amazingly strong and loving woman who has endured too many medical journeys in her time but always has found a way to keep on fighting
About Multiple Myeloma:
Multiple Myeloma , sometimes called bone marrow cancer, is a rare cancer that makes up less than 1% of all malignant cases. Multiple Myeloma is a cancer formed by malignant plasma cells. Normal plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are an important part of the immune system.
