Anyone who knows our Janice Dean knows about her passion, it’s evident in everything she does: from describing her favorite Italian red, to insisting we change the music to the Smiths, to telling her latest raucous adventure…and her passion is contagious. Just like her laughter…she is someone who is so generous with her laugh, and yet you feel like a million bucks every time you get one from her.
In March of 2017, Janice was diagnosed with Stage III rectal cancer, practically unheard of at her young age, upgraded to Stage IV last year. Obviously, this has put an enormous amount of strain on every area of her life…she already has been through two full cycles of chemotherapy and radiation, and after a clean bill of health in July, they ended up finding the cancer had come back again, even before her first 90day checkback. Girl can not catch a break.
The decision: operate simultaneously on the original cancer site as well as some spots that showed up on the liver…two operations, one recovery, first week of December. Janice decided to take a week in Barcelona on her own right beforehand to get some time for reflection and pampering, and on her last night in Spain, sitting at dinner, she ended up hemorrhaging and—yes—having to get emergency rectal surgery in a Barcelona hospital, where none of the nurses (or her hospital roommate) spoke English, where there was no wifi, and where no friends or family lived nearby. (Her dad flew out immediately and spent six or seven hours a day with her!)
She almost had to spend Christmas in a foreign hospital, but ended up getting out of there on Friday, taking 48hrs to fly home, and landing December 23 to get to spend holidays in her home: Seattle.
Since Janice’s return, she has been plagued with mysterious chronic pain, and finally (hopefully), after three emergency room visits when she couldn’t take the pain any more, the cause was found: an serious infection from surgical complications. She is receiving intravenous antibiotics for six weeks, which is a pain in the neck for her day-to-day operations, not to mention while she is still recovering from major surgery.
The current plan: Because the two surgeries weren’t done simultaneously in Spain, as soon as Janice recovers from her infection and the Spanish operation, she will immediately (February 14) have surgery on her liver, and then have to go through a second recovery, just after she has gone through the first one.
Work for the short-term is out of the question, and the end of January marks two months she’s had to take off. For her to recover from liver surgery, it appears the earliest Janice could possibly return will be in April.
We decided to collaborate with our colleagues, friends and family members and fundraise for Janice’s medical treatment, as cancer treatment is so cripplingly expensive …with future medical bills being rather nebulous at this point, missed work, not to mention whatever the heck our girl wants to keep her spirits up.
