Janette vs Cancer

We are starting this campaign on behalf of our life-long friend, Janette, who has recently been diagnosed with stage 3 Papillary Carcinoma with LVI (Lymphatic Vascular Invasion). Asking for help is not easy for Janette and it took a lot of convincing, but we know she would do it for any of us without hesitation because helping and loving people is her passion.
On top of the emotional and physical distress Janette and her family will be enduring this year, there is also a huge financial impact. Though they have medical insurance, there will be tens of thousands of dollars in out of pocket costs.
The journey has just begun. Janette received her diagnosis on December 19th, 2017, and had surgery on December 28th to remove the mass, thyroid, parathyroids and some of her lymph nodes. Janette will have more treatments in the coming months.
Post-surgery, Janette's Thyroglobulin levels came back high which shows there is still cancer using her body like a playground. The final pathology report also showed cancer spread in to her blood vessels. Treatment details are being figured out. We know there will be RAI-131 (a form of radiation specific for this cancer) and likely, chemotherapy. She will have a PET scan after RAI to find out if the cancer has spread.
Janette's adult life has been all about philanthropy-giving to others and helping them however she can. She has worked in non-profits for the last 25 years focusing on giving opportunities to those that are marginalized including foster children and those living in poverty. She has a heart for recognizing the best in people and encouraging them. Her husband, Dustin, works for a non-profit also.
Janette is a mom to two high-school girls, one of whom is graduating this June and is a Rhodes Merit Scholar semi-finalist. She also has SEVEN "grafted" children from her time as a foster parent to whom she counts as her own and maintains relationships with. Janette is surrounded by love and support, and for one very amazing reason: Janette is about the best human we know. She is the one that is ALWAYS helping, always supporting, always fundraising for others. She's the one you can go to with any issue, no matter how big and small and she will be there for you.
And so as a community, we are coming together during this time to help support our friend...and this is the way we send her what she needs so that the financial impact will not provide further devastation to her family.
If you can give now (we are launching this campaign on Janette's 45th birthday!) and then over the next few months, return to receive updates and possibly give more, we will be able to remove a huge burden from her life. Every cent raised will go toward care and treatment for Janette and her family. There's a very real possibility that Janette will not be able to work for weeks at a time. She has very little energy and feels ill much of the time...so any way we can surround her with help, we will.
