Jana's Road to Recovery

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Sabrina, and I am asking for donations to help my niece, Jana, in her recovery from a traumatic brain injury.

Jana is a 17-year-old about to start her senior year at high school. Before the accident, she talked about her future as a tattoo artist or beautician or lawyer but mostly talked about her excitement at finishing high school so she can buy a van and travel. If you'd ever met her, you'd know a super sassy, goofy, and adventurous young woman. She brings joy to all who know her. She has been so excited about her upcoming senior year, and trying to decide what she wanted to be when she got older, if she wanted to go to prom or not, and what classes she wanted to take to fill out her schedule (she only needs 3 credits to graduate). She spent the summer watching her little sister, Brooklyn, and dragging her along on different adventures.

On July 29th, 2021 Jana’s world and ours changed. On that day, Jana went to Walmart to get some goodies, went to her favorite restaurant, and finished her errands with her boyfriend, Nick. She told her mom she wouldn't go on the interstate because of the rain as her mom was known to worry about her. On her way home with Nick in the passenger seat on one of the back roads in Morgantown, she hit some water that caused a brief slow down, resulting in a tow truck hitting her car and sending her into an embankment. While someone else called 911, Nick called Jana's mom, Angie, knowing Jana needed her mom now more than ever. Angie arrived at the same time as the ambulance and fire department. Angie watched what no parent wants to see as Jana had to be extracted with the jaws of life. While fortunately, Nick walked away from the accident with a few broken bones, Jana was not as lucky. She was immediately knocked unconscious from the accident and rushed to Ruby Memorial Hospital. She had multiple brain bleeds and the doctors had to drill a hole to lower the pressure in her brain as her brain started to swell. She spent 4 days in a medically induced coma, having multiple close calls with life-threatening conditions. She fought through it all. The scans show that she has significant brain damage and will need rehabilitation to get her back on her journey of being young and exploring life. She'll need a great deal of help learning how to do basic things, such as following directions, remembering new things, etc. and has a long road of rehabilitation ahead of her.

If you've ever met the Fletcher family, you'd know how hard-working and caring they are for their community. It is nothing to see a house full of kids that they feed at the drop of a hat. Shaun, Jana's father, is a hard-working coal miner that has never shied away from helping his friends, family, and neighbors alike with any projects they need. Angie, a stay-at-home mom and jack of all trades, never fails to take in an extra kid or two or seven to help in whatever way possible. I have seen them welcome an unexpected guest, a neighbor's 7-year-old child, on Christmas day with a plate of delicious food and an invitation to stick around a while. Recently, they housed 4 additional children (who they see as their bonus kids) for weeks while their parents received help with addiction. On one income, they never stop to think about helping others and offer their home, their love, and their compassion without question. Jana and Brooklyn (Jana's sister) follow in those same footsteps, caring for others above all else.

In this time of need for the Fletcher family, they have found that not only are they having to pay for their daughter to get the medical and rehabilitation help she needs, and take care of their 9-year-old as she returns to school, they also have found that Shaun will only be paid for 6 days before having to face unpaid leave with FMLA during Jana's recovery. We are asking for help in paying for Jana's medical bills, covering health insurance's out-of-pocket costs, covering their living expenses while they focus on helping Jana's recovery, as well as potential legal fees and unknown expenses associated with Jana’s recovery process.
