Jan's COVID Relief Fund

Donation protected
Jan Heli Bautista came to the states at the age of 4 with his mother to accompany his ailing grandfather who fought in world war II as a field medic for the U.S. armed forces. Once his grandfather’s health situation improved, the family moved back to the Philippines in 2005.

Leaving the U.S. was difficult for Jan. His early childhood friends and his home had shifted dramatically. Growing up in the Philippines, he experienced a sense of foreignness and distance from his U.S. family. At the age of 15, Jan made the difficult but courageous decision to return back to the United States without his mother. Jan hoped for a college education and a better life for his mother and him.

In the U.S., Jan worked hard and did well in school, and while in high school he joined the honors society, and took advanced placement as well as early college classes. Jan’s mother saw how America offered new opportunities for Jan and his educational dreams, and as a way to support his dreams, she, too, returned to America. But in 2018 Jan’s Mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Everything changed.

In the track of the last two years, Jan’s mom has been bravely facing the challenges and difficulties brought on by cancer treatment. Jan has left college to work more hours and tried to sustain their home life. And COVID has made these challenges that much more complex and life-altering. Without federal or state relief aid, Jan being out of work, Jan and his mother are no longer able to pay rent, food or medical care.. In Jan’s own words, they have been forced to “rely on the kindness, compassion, and generosity of others to be able to make it through these hard times.”

Words from Jan:

“My mother’s struggles as a single mother speak volume and inspire me to do my best everyday. All I can ever hope for in life is to give her that peace of mind where she no longer needs to worry about me. This is the thought that keeps me going every day, to wake up and improve myself not only for me but for her too. I believe there will come a time in the future where her teachings, her suffering, and her diligence will prompt me to do the best I can for my family.”

This fundraised for Jan and his mom will go towards their rents, groceries for food, utility bills and medical needs. Please support our efforts in making sure that families who have been left behind by federal and state COVID relief are cared for. We deeply appreciate your kindness.
