Jan Korzeniewski's Covid Stroke Fund

Janice Korzeniewski is a Mom, a Grandmother, a Wife, a Friend, a Christian and much much more.  She and Larry have been happily married for 37 years.  They have raised two wonderful kids and now have the light of their life, Carter, their Grand Child.  Janice presently works for the Town of Lancaster and had also worked for many years at the Lancaster Senior Citizen program, after previously working tirelessly for years at St. Mary’s Elementary School.  She has been involved with the school and the church for many years and loved the people who she worked with.
 
Larry is a dedicated lawyer. Since 1982 has worked as an attorney representing children in Erie County Family Court in child protective proceedings.   Larry could have practiced in any area of the law, but he chose one in which he could help protect children.  He has represented hundreds, perhaps thousands of children through some very difficult times in their lives. The residents of this area owe Larry a debt of gratitude.  He is truly one of the unsung heroes of our area.
 
As you know, none of us do this alone.  Jan and Larry have supported each other throughout their lives.  As they made their way through life they made new friends and kept old ones.  They were faithful to God.  They were supportive of their family.  Jan was a dedicated worker.  She was working through the Pandemic.  She was careful to wash her hands, use the Clorox wipes to wipe her car, or objects she bought at the grocery store. She social distanced.  Then came her bout with Covid.  She doesn’t know where she got it, but it hit her hard.
 
Jan first tested positive on April 22. She felt so weak. She wouldn’t eat.  
 
A week later, Jan agreed to go to the hospital and was admitted to St. Joseph’s Hospital due to low oxygen levels.  Larry said it was the hardest thing he ever did. He wasn’t able to walk her into the hospital. A guard assisted her and Larry said she looked so frail and weak as she slowly walked away from the car.  Covid had taken over her body and she felt like she was fighting a losing battle.   She was admitted for a few days and then was released with oxygen on May 4th.  We were in the throes of the pandemic. Room was needed for others.  Jan was deemed well enough to go home.
 
The next day she was not doing well. She was struggling to walk. In the evening, she was on her way to the bathroom, when Larry could see she was stumbling and about to fall. He caught her and got her into a chair. She was having a stroke in Larry’s arms. Larry held her and watched as the love of his life had what was later determined to be a Major Stroke – a stroke caused by Covid.  After trips to Sisters of Charity Hospital ER and South Buffalo Mercy Hospital ER she was re-admitted to St Joe’s.
 
The discharge plan from the doctors stated that she should be in a Medical Rehab Unit at a hospital with intense physical, occupational and speech therapy. Because of being Covid positive, she could not go. As a result, her much needed, time critical treatment was on hold.
 
On May 13 she was to be discharged to St. Joseph’s Post-Acute Care Center for rehab. This did not last.  Immediately, she was taken to South Buffalo Mercy ER because they thought she was having another stroke. It turned out to be a false alarm.  She has been in one facility or another since. None – a Medical Rehab Unit.
 
Because she was Covid positive, she has received minimal rehabilitation.  All of the facilities have been Covid units and as such have no access to rehab rooms, gyms with apparatus to assist in rehab. All of her rehab has been bedside rehab.  If you know anything about Stroke treatment, the closer to the event you get treatment the better the results.  She has received some treatment but not the intensive treatment she needs.  The concern is the delay of the intense rehab ordered will adversely affect the desired outcome.  Additionally, of concern is that any lack of progress due to her lower level of rehab AND the weakness she has exhibited from Covid 19 will result from her being cut from treatment by the medical insurance carrier.
 
That brings us to this Go Fund Me request.  Jan is about to get released and get to a facility that can provide the intense rehabilitation that she has needed since the beginning of May. Because of the Covid delay, the insurance is going to run out.  So, we need to reach into our wallets and into our hearts and help Jan.  We need to help Larry.  We need to help Carter’s Grandma so she can hold him again.  They have been there for us.  We need to be there for them.
