Jamie (Hall) Fournier Stage 4 Breast Cancer

Our dear friend, Jamie (Hall) Fournier, Fairless High School Class of 1996, needs our help!   

Jamie at the young age of 21 was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, as we know as Breast Cancer.  She went through treatment to battle this ruthless disease and won.   Then at the age of 28, after she had her lovely babies, Thomas (now 18 ) and Alexandra (now 16), she was again facing this horrible disease.  The treatment plan this time was a mastectomy and treatments which Jamie completed and found her self in remission again.  

Jamie started to feel short of breath and was very nauseated.   Jamie started to think she may be pregnant.  With Covid around, her mother suggested she also be tested.  Well both the pregnancy and the Covid test both came back negative.    Jamie suspected she would be Covid negative since she never leaves the house due to her weakened immune system.    She started to feel more winded and measured that her heart rate was going up to 160 BPM just walking up basic house stairs.     During this timeframe, Little did she know how short that time may be.   With both tests being negative her doctor ordered a chest x-ray, bloodwork, ECG and ultrasound.  She was extremely nervous to even get these test not knowing what effects possible Covid exposure would have on her. But she knew she needed to figure out what was going on, especially with her health history.    Jamie went for the chest x-ray and immediately was told by her doctor that it was a complete white out, and she needed to go to the emergency room right away.  Her lung was not showing up, and it was a full lung collapse.   She was rushed to the pulmonary unit at the University of Alberta Hospital where they surgically put a tube into her lung and began to slowly drain it. They removed 7 liters of fluid out of her lung, and sent the samples to be tested to determine the cause.  


Next would come the hard part.  The doctor warned Jamie that re-expanding her lung would be extremely difficult, as it had been collapsed and collecting muck and fluids.  She would be coughing and gasping for air as it drains out.  Jamie thought, well I have been through many cancer surgeries and a highway roll-over car crash, so how hard could this be?   Little did she know this would be the hardest and most painful experience she has ever had in her life.  Once the lung was expanded, she needed a more permanent tube surgically installed into her lung to deal with the fluid still building up (a PlureX drain).  She would be in the hospital 12 days. Due to Covid, the hospital shut down almost all visitors, and she had limited access to her children or family.

On the 12th day, the big news came from the Doctor.   Jamie's breast cancer had returned and spread into her lung area.  This type of cancer Metastatic Breast Cancer (otherwise known as MBC) is not curable.  This form of breast cancer is the one that kills.   Jamie followed up with her oncologist at Cross Cancer, and all that is currently offered is palliative care.   

Jamie is not ready to give up hope just yet.   Jamie found some trials and procedures that sound very promising, but we need your help.

The reason we are reaching out to everyone is to help cover the exorbitant associated costs that Jamie and her family are now facing.    Jamie needs our support for the following:
