James's medical fund

My brother James finally landed his dream job in his dream location earlier this year. Unfortunately, a series of medical issues has come up and only having been on the job for 5 months he has used all of his paid time off. He has Crohn's Disease and was hospitalized for a bowel blockage in March and then again for 5 days in June, this time two blockages. He tried to keep working through the blockages and was on a liquid diet and pain killers for weeks and went to countless appointments to try to avoid having to miss work. He was still recovering from the latest blockages and rebuilding his leave and savings when, on July 15th he fully herniated a disk in his back. He tried to keep working, but his back deteriorated and on August 8th he needed to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The herniated disk required immediate surgery and a hospital stay, and he hasn't been able to return to work. He has a good job with insurance, but since he was hired less than six months ago he doesn't qualify to keep his medical coverage under Oregon or federal Family Medical Leave Act, and compounding that his university's leave bank is empty. As a result he is only being paid for 8 days of work this month and has incurred tremendous medical expenses and now needs to pay a significant amount for temporary insurance under Cobra since he hasn't worked enough this month to qualify for the group coverage.
