JAMAL WILLIAM MASON

Writer, Philosopher, Educator, Historian.

Kind, Loving, Warrior.

Jamal William Mason was a writer’s writer with a divine gift to teach the world to color in black...history, legacy, culture. He had a passion for writing because he had a passion for people, particularly of the African Diaspora. This vision with his pen that he used to write with precision was that black people are beautiful. It was always Jamal’s vision to show the world that black is legendary and worthy in a world that often fails to recognize black brilliance. He saw oppression and depression in the black community but used his pen’s impression as the change he wanted to see in the world.

He believed in the Master, the Most High God, who he saw everywhere and proudly pointed out the Master’s work -- in trees, animals, oceans, rivers, and people.  He was passionate about people and passionate living in peace, truth, and kindness. Some show their passion in what they say. Jamal spoke few words with his mouth but spoke loudly with his pen. He also expressed himself through his fashion -- classic, tailored, original. He took great pride in his appearance, not to be seen but to be his best. The way he dressed was the way he saw himself.

Jamal was a fighter but only fought when it was a fight worth having. He was a man of his word and lived with purpose. Who he became while on this earth was a man of integrity, hard work, and perseverance.  He lived by the philosophy that if you want something, you stop at nothing to get it and don’t let obstacles get in your way.

The world has lost a warrior that fought with his pen. We’ve lost a family member, a husband, a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a church member, a teacher, a filmmaker, an historian, and a philosopher but most importantly a lover of humanity.

We cannot express how deeply Jamal was loved by all around him. We are truly and deeply saddened by our loss. We are grieving not only as a family but also as a community -- in ways no words can truly express. As we cope we all are hurting and handling things the way we know how. Some go to Facebook to pay their respects in pictures and kinds words, some sit alone, quietly trying to process their loss. Together we hope that by hosting a homegoing that loved ones from near and far will find peace, hope, and comfort in honoring Jamal’s legacy.

There’s nothing we or anyone else can say to make things better. All we can do is love and remember Jamal for who he was -- kind, loving, and a man of integrity. Please help us write a beautiful ending to the earthly chapter of his life by giving Jamal a classy, dignified, loving homegoing service to reflect his rich legacy, which lives on in all of us.
