Jamaican-Me-Smarter

I am currently in my first semester at Nazareth College in the Master's of Social Work program. I have been selected as 1 of 15 students across multiple graduate and undergraduate departments to embark on a life changing trip to provide assistance to the community in Kingston, Jamaica! I'm starting this GoFundMe campaign to help me afford to go on the trip!

The trip will take place in March of 2020 and last one week. The week will consist of painting houses, shadowing several Social Work institutions and engaging with the local population to identify and assist with any other needs. The cost to attend this trip is $1500.

I have never studied abroad, nor been to any other country besides Canada. I'm very excited and honored to be selected for this course! There will also be several other meetings throughout the semester to prepare for and debrief from the trip. Through this experience I will also earn 3 credit hours toward my degree!

The reason I'm asking for financial assistance is simple: Grad school is expensive! Although my tuition is covered by student loans (Which I will have to pay back eventually), I have plenty of other regular expenses that keep my wallet pretty light. I currently commute back and forth to Nazareth campus from Geneva NY, which is about an hour away, twice a week. I also live on my own with two adorably needy cats. To support myself I work a full-time job assessing adults with disabilities, facilitate drum circle workshops and drive for Lyft whenever I can. On top of all that, i spend most weekends and weekday evenings studying, occasionally staying up for a full 24hrs to complete long research papers. Even with multiple sources of income the cost of living keeps me living fairly paycheck to paycheck. Nazareth doesn't offer any more financial assistance or scholarships for Study Abroad trips and department staff suggested I create a GoFundMe to help out with the costs.

So...why should you donate to me? So far, I have been an exemplary Grad Student.  I've received an "A+" on several assignments thus far, which is widely considered nearly unattainable by our MSW department. I also have given quite a bit of my free time volunteering for my community and facilitating drum circles at schools, libraries and local parks over the last 5 years. I believe I've shown that I am a good investment and whatever skills and information I learn, I plan to continue to share with my community!

Your donations will bring me closer to gaining my Master's in Social Work degree and learn valuable cross cultural lessons that I can use to better help others in the future. I sincerely appreciate your consideration and I will hold myself accountable to everyone that donates and continue to strive for an A+ on every assignment!
Tentative itinerary: “While in-country, we will be engaging with the Kingston community through visiting Bustamante Hospital for Children ( http://www.serha.gov.jm/hospitals/bmch ), nursing homes, teen mothers educational centers, University of the West Indies campus and hospital ( https://www.mona.uwi.edu/ , http://uhwi.gov.jm/ ), participating in an after school program for students that experienced various traumas, the Riverton community and other sites."
