My name is Ken Smollen, I'm from Tullamore and I am a candidate in the constituency of Offaly / North Tipperary in the upcoming General Election. I am the chairperson and a founding member of one of Ireland’s newest political parties, the Irish Democratic Party, which was founded about 18 months ago.
The people of our country are crying out for real change and that is what I, and the other members of the IDP have been working towards since the formation of our party.
The real changes that we desperately need can begin as follows:
When decisions have to be made that affect the lives of our people, they can be seen on our website, on our facebook page and in your local newspaper. Every person of voting age can then take part in the decision making process by simply registering their interest in doing so. Their preferred decision can be sent by text to a central number (similar to taking part in a TV programme). Local centres will also be used for people who do not use modern technology where people can call in and register their preferred decision.
I must then vote in accordance with the wish of the majority of our people. If I do not carry out the wishes of our people I will be expelled from the IDP, without any appeals process AND, therefore, must also resign my Dail seat.
I will shortly be signing a pledge to that effect which can be witnessed and signed by as many of the people of our constituency who wish to do so.
This creates real accountability for the first time since the foundation of the state. It is also a complete change from the current system where politicians only need to contact you every 5 years or so when they need your vote. For the rest of their time in high office they can do exactly as they please no matter what the consequences for the people who elected them!
As many people are already aware, I have been standing beside and supporting people for the past 2 years who through no fault of their own have found themselves at the mercy of the banks that they were forced to help bail out. I have also stood alongside small business owners and their employees demanding fairness. I have also been vocal in my support for all of the nurses, doctors and the many vital support staff at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore. I have visited and spoken to the many victims of the recent flooding throughout our constituency and have witnessed for myself the devastation they have experienced with little or no Government aid to ease their plight. I have been vocal in highlighting the terrible treatment of our Elderly and People with Disabilities all of whom have been treated with utter contempt by way of unfair cut-backs.
I have also been vocal in my opposition to the unjust Water Charge and Property Tax!
I am passionate about my county and our people and the total injustices that have been inflicted on us by successively uncaring Governments who have targeted our less well-off and most vulnerable people in society.
In this General Election I am running against candidates from well-funded parties who have unlimited funds and resources.
As I have no means of funding my Election campaign I am asking for your help in funding the cost of posters and leaflets. I am relying on your help to make real change happen and the only place that we can make real change together is from within Leinster House. It is vital that we have strong minded TD’s who will put the interests and welfare of our people before all else. I think that my activities over the last couple of years have proven that I am more than capable of standing up for the people I hope to represent.
Finally, thanks everyone for your continued support for which I will always be extremely grateful.
