Jake Liang was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric stomach cancer (linitis plastica) on September 29th, 2016 at Kaiser Permanente in Anaheim, California. It is a rare and aggressive cancer. Everyone, including Jake himself, was shocked! Ever since then, he underwent 5 different treatments (3 types of chemotherapy, a radiation therapy, and an immunotherapy) at Kaiser and City of Hope at Duarte, California. The treatments kept his cancer stable for a while. He fought heroically through his illness showing strength and grace through every stage of the journey.
As his cancer sadly progressed, Jake was hospitalized at City of Hope from June 19th to 26th when the tumor further blocked food through his stomach. On the night of July 8th, Jake slipped and fell at home. His mom called 911 and Jake was rushed to the nearest emergency room and shortly afterwards hospitalized at St. Jude Hospital at Fullerton, California. Over the last 2 months, he was in and out of the emergency room at St. Jude for pain and various other issues. On August 11th at 8:30 p.m., after fighting courageously for almost a year, Jake passed away peacefully at St. Jude. He was only 37 years old.
What concerned Jake the most was his children's (Julian is 11 and Neo is 6) college education in the future. The kids are young, and the future is uncertain. A trust fund was set up for Julian and Neo's college education when they reach age 18. With the rising costs of college education, it is very unlikely that Jake's current trust fund is sufficent to cover the children's future education choices.
