Jake & Nicole 4 wks Volunteering in Cambodia!

Hi we’re Jake and Nicole! We are heading out to a village near Kampot, Cambodia in April to work on a really great project focusing on sustainable community development. We’re hoping you can help us meet our fundraising goal in order to support the charity running the project.

Here’s a little bit about the project:

- Provide support to local riverside community
- Main focus is to assist with the rehabilitation and expansion of the mangrove forest that is key to the livelihood of the local community
- Additionally, helping the community with basic construction and renovation of the wooden homes
- Also, increase access to education by teaching English to local children

The money we raise will be used mainly for the running of the project, as well as covering our accommodation on their site (very basic wooden huts!) We pay our own travel fees.

Why Cambodia?

We were invited to a family wedding in Singapore in May and this inspired us with the possibility of making the most of our time in Asia. With all the sh*....ahem, really bad stuff going on in the world as of late and the increase in flooding and various environmental issues around the world due to climate change, we couldn't let the opportunity pass us by so we started to do our research for a project out there that could help make a real difference.

Mangrove, not mandrake...

What is a mangrove? And why is it important that we rehabilitate the mangrove forests?  Watch this!

- Mangroves are a key piece of how we address climate change — helping us both adapt to its impacts and take carbon out of the atmosphere. In fact, taking all their benefits into account, it is said that mangroves do more for us than any other ecosystem on Earth.
- A patch of mangroves can absorb up to 10x more carbon than a similar sized patch of terrestrial forest.
- Mangroves protect shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. They help prevent erosion by stabilising sediments with their tangled root systems.
- Mangroves maintain water quality and clarity, filtering pollutants and trapping sediments originating from land.
- Mangroves create a sanctuary for an extraordinary range of creatures.  3/4 of all tropical fish are born here and countless reptiles and birds call this ecosystem home. These coastal wetlands support threatened and endangered species including sea turtles!
- The local village community heavily depend on this ecosystem for food for themselves and to sell, creating an income.
- Globally, more than 35% of the world’s mangroves are already gone due to tourist developments and harvesting unsustainably.

Thanks for your support, all donations big or small are appreciated!
