Sometimes we are given the opportunity to do something extraordinary. 15 preservice teachers from ECU campuses across WA have been given this opportunity.
15 passionate and dedicated students have been selected to travel to the outskirts of Jakarta where many disadvantaged families have formed a shanty-dwelling community on an abandoned rubbish dump. Forgotten by society as we know it- these people have no access to the basic necessities such as the supply of food and water, personal care, health care and education. In most cases families have no legal documentation of their birth or existence which ultimately stops them from being able to get educational or medical assistance and employment.
Disheartening as it may seem these people have made use of what they have. Our aim is to implement social action projects within the community that may contribute to making their lives that bit easier.
We will be doing what we can to create positive changes on these locals lives; volunteering in schools, helping with educational pursuits and facilitating renovations/additions as they are needed; visiting and assisting an orphanage for disabled children who have been abandoned; and by holding community events and creating small but significant care packages for mums and families.
We, ECU students have been lucky to receive a Government Grant (New Colombo Plan) that funds our travels; therefore every cent we raise goes straight into making a difference to the lives of the children and families we meet in the Bulakan!
The support we have and continue to receive warms our heart and fuels the desire to make a massive impact that can be sustained for years to come! The smiles on the faces of the children is something we will never forget!
It's not just about making a donation! It's about making a difference!!!
