Jade's Cali Internship

So I've struck gold, I've officially been accepted to a dietetic internship through Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

But unfortunately, real gold is not involved.

As most of you know, I studied at the University of Minnesota in the Nutrition program, specializing in Dietetics. Look! Here's me on graduation day last year:

This obviously opened so many doors and windows to where my career would take me next. In nutrition, there are many available paths a student can take after graduation - one being a dietetic internship (D.I. for short).

In brief: a D.I. is a necessary step to become a Registered Dietitian. They are supervised practice experiences encompassing all the aspects of the dietetic career (clinical, community, and food service) within an 8-24 month period. Much like a medical residency, these are full-time (40+, plus homework), rigorous programs that are awarded on a very competitive basis through a computer matching process. Most often, these are unpaid and even require tuition payment. Completion of a D.I. results in eligibility to sit for an R.D. exam, and alas! gaining the title of a bonafide, full-fledged Registered Dietitian.

After years of gaining enough experience, months of planning, days of contemplation, hours of essay writing, and too many minutes of anxiety, I got the coveted “Congrats!” email in my inbox – I screamed!

Getting to the point ------

This August I’ll be moving to/near Malibu, California to begin my 10-month internship with Pepperdine University.

The catch: A private school internship comes with a private school price; while I’m fortunate enough to have gotten a small scholarship through the school, I’ll still be taking out a *painfully large* personal loan (student loans are not eligible) to pay for the remainder of my tuition, and my California living expenses (rent, food, transportation, etc.). Since the internship is full-time and unpaid, I’ll hopefully be taking a part-time gig at a local coffee shop for a bit of income, and maybe that’ll pay for my groceries? So let’s face it, I need help.

I’m so, so grateful for this opportunity and I know I couldn’t have made it this far without my family and friends supporting me along the entire process. I know I’ll come out of this experience with an entirely new perspective on life, my career, and the person I want to be.

Any questions about my journey are highly encouraged if you’d like to know more, I’m beyond excited about this opportunity (and quite frankly can’t stop talking about it anyway).

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing to open this page, read my words, and consider helping me with my next adventure. Not a penny of this fund will go unnoticed or unappreciated, because my community (all of you!) is what keeps me lifted, evolving and thriving.
