Hello friends, family and all kind souls who want to help us empower international women. We are raising money for a volunteer trip to South East Asia. We will be working in sex trafficking prone neighborhoods performing research on the issues promoting sex trafficking to develop pragmatic ways to combat them as well as working to educate women in these communities on the threat of sex-trafficking. One of the root causes of trafficking is ignorance; young impoverished girls are gullible to the false hope of a better life that traffickers instill in them. They are promised job opportunities and food for their family and willingly travel with their traffickers, naive to what is happening to them. After much research we decided on a program based outside of Kathmandu, Nepal that focuses on public education and research. We will be living with a local Nepalese family for the duration of our stay and working six days a week. Please read on to learn more about Danielle and me and the program we will be working with.
I’m Jade; I’m a recent graduate from the University of Oregon with a degree in International Studies and Political Science. I’m currently residing in San Francisco where I moved to work with a startup company that focuses on global awareness and sustainable living. I spend my spare time volunteering with Pachamama, a human rights organization that works to empower indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest to preserve their lands and culture and I also manage a craft cocktail bar in San Mateo. My long-term goal after graduate school is to work in international development, specifically international human rights.
I’m Danielle; I’m currently living in Milwaukie, OR and working towards my license in Massage Therapy at East West College of The Healing Arts. I spend my mornings as a Research Analyst for a Lead Generation company in Vancouver, WA and spend my evenings studying and attending class in Portland, OR. Once licensed, I plan to focus my practice in Traditional Thai Massage and Craniosacral Therapy. I am very excited for this new adventure; I am eager to make a positive impact in this world and immerse myself in a foreign culture.
Sex trafficking is a growing problem in Nepal; some 12,000-15,000 young girls are trafficked each year. Typically girls between 11 and 20 are trafficked either through coercion or they are sold, sometimes by their own family. Once trafficked these girls are subjected to a life no one should ever live. They are beaten and forced to service between 6 and 40 men a day. We believe that education is the foundation to women’s empowerment and therefore liberation, which is why this program speaks to us.
We have found a wonderful organization with an amazing program called Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN). Here is a link to learn more about the organization and the project we will be focusing on specifically: http://www.volunteersinitiativenepal.org/women-empowerment-program/ The program fees are $625.00 EACH ($1250) for one month and covers food, accommodations and monies to run the program. This is an extremely affordable program because we work directly with the organization versus going through an agency. Less bureaucracy equals a lower fee.
We plan to use our funds first on the program fee for both of us and anything beyond that will go towards other necessities, like shots, in order to make this trip possible. Thank you so much for investing in our cultural development and the future of Nepalese women.
