Jade King. What do you think of when you hear that name? Think about it for a minute. I think of a world-class stenographer at the top of her game. I think of a woman filled with wit, humour and a talent for storytelling. I think of someone who adores her husband, treasures her children and cherishes her chihuahuas. I think of someone from Australia who lives in Hong Kong and who travels the globe, tapping away on a little, plastic box, as she affectionately refers to her steno machine. I think of someone who loves all things Royal. I think of someone who is idolised and revered by her peers all over the world. I think of someone who inspires and motivates stenographers (students and seasoned reporters alike) in all four corners of the globe. I think of someone who is my friend.
But there is more to the Jade King we all know and love. In 2011, Jade was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Jade has been able to manage the disease through a combination of things, such as medication, diet and plenty of rest; however, because of the sheer volume of drugs over eight years (mostly NSAIDs), her kidneys have now failed. This on top of the fact that Jade was already due to have open-heart surgery in the new year; you see, Jade has two leaking heart valves, which is something which can happen in those who have AS.
Jade and her husband, Joel, and their children, Rufus, 13, and Zadie, 10, are unable to travel home to Melbourne for Christmas, something which I know all the family has been looking forward to for months. Now back in hospital, after having been released for a few short days, Jade is also unable to do what she loves and what she excels at for the foreseeable future, ie., at least four months.
Jade has always received messages/questions from people around the world, and now is no exception, though the circumstances have changed quite a bit. I know she is still doing her best to respond to each and every one which she receives.
Jade and Joel now find themselves requiring money for things which they, like a lot of people in this life, never thought they would. Jade needs to wait another month or so for her kidney function to stabilise before she can have her much-needed heart surgery. If we can get her house equipped with the right equipment and the oxygen she needs, she can wait at home. Please help her to get out of the hospital and back into her own home!! Once her kidneys are stable, however, she will return to hospital for her heart operation, and the hard road to recovery will begin. To that end, funds raised will also go towards buying a wheelchair, a hospital bed, rent, medical expenses, and logistics of getting to/from the hospital, which is two hours away from home.
Jade is the breadwinner in the King family, whilst Joel is looking after the children and running the household. All the savings which they, between them, have accumulated as a family have been spent in the medical battle against AS over the last seven or eight years.
With this in mind, I say with my hand on my heart that any donations you are able to give will be gratefully received by the Kings. By all means, please share this, Jade's story, on your social media accounts and help to raise the funds we need to get Jade all she needs to recuperate and get back to tapping her plastic box ASAP.

For your peace of mind: For those who don't know me, I, too, am an Australian stenographer, though I live in the UK and have done since 1995. I have known Jade for a number of years and we last saw each other when she was working in The Hague in November. I am listed as both the organiser and the beneficiary for this campaign. I will be withdrawing, in my name, the funds raised and then wiring to the Kings in Hong Kong, as Hong Kong is not a supported GFM country. I will undergo a strict verification process in order to do that.
Donations can potentially come from all over the world in a number of currencies. GoFundMe does not charge conversion fees but certain banks may.
