Jacob’s Fighting ATRT Journey

Jacob is a happy, full of energy and joy 2 year old. He has always met his milestones in time and he’s always been a healthy strong boy. On Feb 9th, 2024, when he was only 20 months old, he woke up unable to walk. He would try but he’s walk would be wobbly and he would fall every few minutes. His parents thought he might be getting sick, so decide to pay attention to the symptoms. On Feb 13th they decided to take him to the doctor since the wiggly walk was getting worse; the pediatrician said it might be a post-Infectious encephalitis and recommended getting a CT Scan done, that is when his parents took Jacob to Rady Children’s Hospital. After being admitted to the ER and getting the CT Scan done, the family was given the tragic news, Jacob had a brain tumor. He was admitted right away, and two days later he was taken into the OR for a tumor removal surgery. He recovered well from surgery, but the news of the tumor being cancer arrived on Feb 21st; he was diagnosed with ATRT, a very rare and aggressive kind of cancer usually diagnosed in children under 3 years old (58 diagnoses per year in the United States). Jacob started his chemotherapy on March 12th, the same day his central line was placed. His treatment plan has been 2 induction chemo cycles, and 3 high dose chemo cycles with stem cell rescue therapy. He has done amazing through all of them and finally got to ring the bell on July 25th. Unfortunately this journey continues, as he will need to have proton radiation into his brain in the hopes of this tumor not coming back. He will start radiation treatment in September and then maintenance chemo.
