Jacob's Back Surgery

Jacob is a happy six year old who has to have major back surgery. He was born with Achondroplasia and had been lucky enough to avoid all major surgical procedures, until now. Jacob was unable to walk in early July of this year. He was taken to the hospital, where they ran test, ordered him out of school and gave him strong pain meds for his back, leg and butt pain.
After MONTHS of fighting with insurance to get the MRI approved, it was finally approved. December 26th he had his MRI, after a short hospital stay and some minor complications he was sent home. Three days later we went back to find out that he has horrible narrowing in his spinal cord, in his lower back. Two areas are being affected. It is causing sever pain, weakness of legs, and tons of pins and needles feelings. The orthopedic and neuro surgeons said that they HAVE to do surgery, asap. This can cause permanent nerve and muscle damage. The surgery will be early January and the recovery is long. He will have five vertebrates partially removed, a rod and screws placed. He will stay asleep and intubated in the PICU for 24 to 48 hours after surgery because of his allergic reaction to anesthesia. To follow will be many days in the PICU and an unknown amount of days on the main peds floor. This is a huge financial burden due to loss of work, hotels, travel expenses, Jacob medical bills, and childcare for Jacobs brothers and sister while mom/dad are at the hospital with jacob. We look forward to Jacob's recovery, so that he is allowed to be a kid again. He is a positive, happy, outgoing, friendly, and awesome little boy. He loves receving mail and sending letters. He loves his family and friends.
