As many of you know, I will be heading to Kampala, Uganda on August 27th until December 15th to work with the Refugee Law Project (RLP) as a volunteer counsellor and social-worker-in-training. This trip will be a joint venture between Wilfrid Laurier University and Makere University. For more on the RLP and what they do please see: http://www.refugeelawproject.org/
During the 20 plus years of the Lord'sResistance Army's war, as many as 230,000 boys have been forced to become child soldiers. These young men were put on the front line of the war to kill and to be used as protection against bullets for the adult soldiers. A similary large number of young women have been kidnapped, tortured, and experienced sexual violence. A total of 1.4 million people have been displaced, tortured, traumatized, witnessed family members being killed and experienced violence beyond imagine. The toll of this war on individual mental health is catastrophic.
In order to learn and assist this worthy venture, I will be with the RLP's Mental Health and Psychosocial Wellbeing Programme working closely with children, adolescents, adults, families, groups and communities. This programme "provides forced migrants with the psychosocial and mental health assistance they need to cope with the trauma of the past and meet the demands of life in Uganda".
If you come out and support me on my fundraising day, you will not only be supporting me personally, but you will be supporting something that will have a lifelong effect. Not only will I gain skills and knowledge that I will be able to apply throughout my entire career in our multicultural society, but a portion of the funds (almost $1000) will go to training another Ugandan student/volunteer to be able to continue to do this work once I return.
As the RLP does not charge its clientele for their services and receives all its funding from the University, I have been asked to raise $8000 for this trip. This will fund my, accomodations, day-to-day living, and provide a supplement so that another Ugandan student/volunteer will be able to train at the same time I am training. I will not only bring back those skills to work within our muticultural society, but I will also leave another individual to continue working within Uganda.
