My Fight Against Multiple Sclerosis

Please Help Me Get My Life Back!

My name is Jackie, I am a mother of one and live near Guildford in Surrey, UK. I have been living with multiple sclerosis (MS) for over 19 years.

Before I became ill, I worked as a gardener for country estates and as a furniture upholsterer. Whilst working two jobs I also brought up my daughter Emma as a single mother, so you can see, I was always active! I spent my days outside gardening, walking or working on the land or with my hands.

19 years ago, my life changed.

I was diagnosed with an Incurable, slow, progressive form of MS. This disease has severely affected the mobility and strength in my legs, arms and hands and slowly robbed me of my life and of my independence. I now can only walk a few meters using a walking frame, I cannot go outside unassisted and I cannot bend down or use my left hand. This has restricted my independent movements to moving around just a few rooms in my house. I do this with the help of a walking frame and it is a painfully slow process. I am unable to use a normal wheelchair because I don’t have the strength in my hands or arms therefore I can only really move from my chair to the toilet or to my bedroom.

There is hope though…

The SitAbility motorised chair has the power to transform my life. It is a powered chair which can pivot on the spot and can also move up to head height and down low with the touch of a button. The seat also tilts so I can get in and out of it without assistance. These may seem like small things, but the activities that they enable mean that I can get my life back!

- Designed to turn the spot so it suitable for use in the house, or outside.

- I will be able to move around the kitchen, open cupboards up high and load the dishwasher down low.

- I will be able to prepare meals for myself.

- I will be able to visit neighbors and travel to the local shops unassisted.

- And MOST of all, I will be able to go into my garden on my own, tend to my plants again and enjoy the sunshine.

The chair is designed to progress with my illness and so as I lose more mobility, the chair can be adjusted, preserving some parts of my life and my independence.

Unfortunately, the chair costs £9000.

I have a small online cosmetics business and my disability benefit, but this is simply not enough to afford this chair. My family cannot afford to make this purchase either, this is why we are appealing for any funds you could give to us to help make this dream a reality.

Any funds given will go directly into the purchase of the chair for myself.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
