Jackie's Journey

Background

Jackie was at home when she realized that she couldn't find a closet in her house after looking for a while because she didn't know what a closet was or what one looked like. Thankfully she was aware that this wasn’t right and let Garrett know. After finding out she had a tumor in her brain she was hospitalized and surgery was scheduled to remove it and run tests.

Jackie was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma cancer in her brain. This is a very aggressive brain cancer and grows rapidly. After her brain surgery the doctors had her start chemotherapy and radiation. When Jackie was released she was very weak and her perception was really off from what her brain was telling her and what reality was. Her eyesight was challenged greatly as well as the entire left side of her body. Jackie went from walking after her surgery to falling and not being able to get up because her left side was basically asleep. Jackie was re-admitted twice to help her with swelling in her brain. After a new MRI they realized that Jackie’s brain was not only swollen but that a tumor had replaced the area in which the first was removed but now pushing down and putting pressure on her brain. With Jackie in ICU they started high doses of steroids.

Jackie remained in the Renown Reno hospital for almost a week and was finally transferred to UCSF by care flight. She has been admitted to UCSF to get treatment from a new team of neurosurgeons. Surgery is being scheduled to remove the tumor and pressure on her brain, hopefully giving the feeling back on her left side. With rehabilitation, the hope is that she will be able to live the rest of her short life with at least some feeling of normalcy.

Her original prognosis left her with a 15-month approximation of life expectancy but this may be significantly reduced depending upon what happens with the new tumor. The radiation and chemotherapy is being administered to keep the growth of new tumors to a minimum and slow the growth.

Jackie is a serious bad ass for those that know her! She has her hiking boots sitting on her hospital bed along with her bandanas. She also has Garrett, her amazing husband and who is her best advocate and love of her life. Taylor, their son, is the “Rock of Gibraltar”. He has his gentle ways and shows her what she has to be so grateful for. She has a beautiful family and many amazing friends.

Her needs as well as Garrett and Taylors are to be there now, in the present, and not to dwell on the inevitable future. Also, to have people spend the night every now and then so that she has an advocate with her at all times and to hold her hand when she is having a hard time. Garrett and Taylor are always by her side but need to take care of themselves with rest and nutrition so they can be present for doctors' rounds and life with Jackie right now.
